Webster Fee Set to Be McCarthy's Biggest at Town
Friday, 20th May 2016 10:30

Portsmouth defender Adam Webster will reportedly cost the Blues more than £500,000 plus Matt Clarke, which would be the largest fee Town have spent on a player since Mick McCarthy took charge in November 2012. Yesterday, TWTD revealed that the Blues are close to making Webster their first addition of the summer.

According to the Portsmouth News Town will pay Pompey a fee “well in excess of £500,000” plus 19-year-old Clarke, who spent 2015/16 on loan at Fratton Park, for Webster, 21, who we understand was initially a Blues target in January.

If that figure is correct it surpasses the £350,000 paid to Danish side Esbjerg fB for left-back Jonas Knudsen last summer.

It’s understood that personal terms are still to be agreed but that the moves are expected to go through early next week without a problem.

Speaking in an interview in the match programme for the final home game of the season, owner Marcus Evans indicated that he would be willing to pay fees this summer if required.

All I want is to see the same amount of money again paid in the midfield. I think everyone will be happy then.

Nice one. Mick obviously rates him very highly. Now wondering if we'll see Smith or Berra move on. Can't imagine we'd pay 500k for a back up defender. Nice to see Marcus Evans get his wallet out again!

Obviously mm rates him highly. I couldnt see smith or berra going without a replacement coming in. Now we have one i think it shortens the odds a bit.

I know nothing about him, but glad to see he isn't some old Mick mate given one last contract and if he was part of the Portsmouth side that played us off the park last season then he looks a promising signing. Refreshing to see us land someone early doors rather than fiddle about watching players get snapped up like we did last summer.

Well he made his name at full back so let's see if he plays him there, I can't see smith or Berra being dropped

I'll admit I know nowt about this lad but for us to be shelling out half a million quid he must have something about him. But Pompey seem happy to take the money given they're getting Matt Clarke too (who played quite a few games for them last season). So couldn't we save that cash to go towards a half decent winger and keep Clarke?

Bold move. Hope it pays dividends. Any more news about whether Smith has signed his contract?

£500,000 defender is one thing but now I'd like to see a £2m - £2.5m creative midfielder. That would be a statement of intent.

Let's face it.. this looks like it ticks the main box for a lot of people on here to be happy... if he's good as well as costing a reasonable fee, then that's a bonus, isn't it?!

Probably been signed as cover from Chambers at right back!! Let's hope this is the 1st of many signings - a couple of signings from Championship and top League One sides would be good too!

Spoke to a Pompey fan about him at work. Said he rates him very highly with big potential and it not surprised by the fee the papers are suggesting. I happened to watch both pompey playoff legs and didn't take much notice at the time of him. But noticed both centre backs (him being one of them) were very footballing and loved bringing the ball out from the back.

Also he is right sided. If a fee is going to be paid I expect he's in mind to start next season. I'd love to see Smith partner him with Smith being on his favoured left side. For me Smiths the better centre half than Berra who I think is past his best.

Back 4 next season for me

Kenlock Smith Webster Chambers

Hooray, seems like Mr Evans has managed to find his dusty ol' cheque book again. Perhaps he'd just mislaid it behind his sofa for the last 2 years or so! Well better late than never. Hat off to you Mr Evans, hopefully a few vital lessons have been learned from last season and you've decided to have another serious bash at the prize. A few more of these I'm sure will do spades to restore the faith among many of us! It's been rather hard to keep the faith with the ideology of hoofball. Please keep this up and I might not need to ring in sick twice next year on both the Mondays after the EA derby games!
Let's hope this one proves money well spent.

Quite incredible really, shows what an unbelievable job Micks done when he hasn't spent any more than 350,000 on one player.

Young, with potential to grow, right footed, likes to play out of the back instead of hoof it and highly rated.

Well done Mr Evans and Mick, I applaud you both.

interesting one this.
Has Mick finally noticed how uncomfortable the back four are on the ball so wants a ball playing centre half?
Does he simply want better balance (no more two left footers in the middle) - but then would surely move Chambers inside?
or is one of either Berra (Scotland returnrumours) or Smith moving on??

Could be an interesting summer!

Shame about Clarke moving the other way but exactly what we need - ball playing right footed centre back. Superb start. Now let's get a wide player (or two).

While I welcome the news of what sounds like a good centre half coming to the club.
I'm a bit concerned that this signals Smiths departure. - he's still contract talks and was not dropped towards the end of the season for no reason... also not sure how Clarke + £500k is good value for someone who was playing alongside Clarke and is a few years older...
Hopefully I'm proved wrong! Would like to see Berra move on and Smith move to the left - where he should have been

On the other hand he could be planning to play him wide on the Left?

I have a feeling Berra will be off to Glasgow Rangers this summer for a decent fee.
It will probably cover the cost of transfers for the summer.

It would allow Chambo to move to his best position along side Smith. with Webster to provide competition for RB and a CB spot.

Step aside Berra.

Actually, thinking about it, are we really better off letting one of our youngsters go and bringing in one of theirs?

Haven't seen Webster play, but guess that our scouts and coaches have seen Portsmouth play a number of times and compared the two. Obviously Webster is the better of the two so to me it sounds like a good move.
