McCarthy Wishes Murphy All the Best at Newcastle and Dismisses Kaikai Claims
Saturday, 27th Aug 2016 18:14

Town boss Mick McCarthy wished striker Daryl Murphy all the best at Newcastle United after confirming that the Blues had accepted an offer from the Magpies for the Irish international striker. We understand the fee to be £3 million with no add-ons.

“He’s gone to Newcastle,” McCarthy confirmed, who revealed the final decisions regarding the striker’s exit were taken this morning with the 33-year-old pencilled in to start today’s 1-0 victory against Preston.

“He’s told me he wants to go, he’s put a transfer request in and it’s always my view that you’re either inside the tent peeing out or outside the tent peeing in.

“He has to leave, so we’ve got other players and we’ll get other players in. It’s a great move for him, I think.

“Good luck to him, he’s been terrific for me but I think it’s one of those deals which can’t really be stopped. Good luck to him.

“It’s good business for the club, bearing in mind the performances, the goals we’ve had out of him. It is and we’ll reinvest that.”

McCarthy dismissed suggestions he was disappointed that Murphy requested the move: “Not really, no. It kind of makes it easier for me. If it’s me that’s stopping him and I stop a 33-year-old going to play for Newcastle who arguably are going to be top of the league, I think he’d resent that for the rest of my life.

“And if I was him I’d do the same. So I have a very pragmatic view on that. I’d prefer to let him go, he’s asked for a move, go and do well for them and I hope he does and continues to do well for Ireland and we’ll reinvest.

“And by the way get somebody else because I seem to remember when I came here there was a bit of apathy towards him. When I re-signed him I can’t remember everybody dancing up and down the streets with their knickers in the air.

“So I put my arm round him, I signed him at Sunderland, TC got to work with him and I think he’s improved unbelievably and he’s a real force to be reckoned with now.

“We’ll do it again, so let’s see if we can find somebody else and do it again with a younger version. Good luck to Murph.”

McCarthy says he has targets in mind and that the wheels are in motion regarding the signing of a replacement before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Wednesday with the club constantly looking at contingencies for potential departures.

“There’s always discussions between Marcus and I about who we would like to sign,” he added.

He says he has given Blues owner Evans a list of his pre-deadline targets: “Email’s a wonderful thing. I’m not a Luddite.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy said claims that Crystal Palace wideman Sullay Kaikai was at Portman Road were news to him: “If he’s here at the game he must enjoy watching us because that’s the first I’ve heard.”

I wonder if Dids is resenting MM not letting him go to Leicester?

Good move for Daryl Murphy, thanks for the goals & the memories, all the best to him. Could be a good move for ITFC IF the fee is reinvested in a younger striker. We will see.

If we can get another couple in the Grant Ward ilk it will be a terrific deal

Don't waste the money on loan players , we need our own players to build long term .

15,000 at Portman Road today.
Anything to do with McCarthy and tedious hoofball do you think?

Murphy has been so integral to our success under McCarthy, and I really hope we are able to bring in a new target man or two before Wednesday. Our strike force of injured McGoldrick, non-scoring Sears and super-sub Pitman won't get us promoted, so we need to bring in quality and quickly. That will mean spending some of that £3M, not just free transfers like Best (although he may be worth signing as a backup option).

£3M for a 33 year old, who didn't really perform and had injuries last season is in hindsight good business, providing the full value is reinvested, taking into account the savings on his wages.

Glad MM used the word 'players' rather than 'player' in regards to transfers. Despite a win today, the squad still lacks a couple of quality additions.

Penguin were you there? Were you there last week. If you were then you comment is fair enough, if not it has no credibility. We are playing more football and performances are better. Please just stop sniping.

As for today's attendance - it is BH weekend!

Great deal for us especially if we get to spend most of the money. Murphy done very well one resin and got us in the play offs. But the play off against the sc*m and last season he has been poor let's be honest. Hope we go and buy a young hungry goal scoring striker in league 1/2, we never seem to do that and other clubs do, look at people like Andre gray! He better not replace him with another striker whose in his 30's with no future in front of him

Wonder what sort of welcome he'll get being a Ex Sunderland player. 🤔🤔

I'm sure that'll all be forgotten if he scores the goals that gets them promoted.

Good luck to Murph. Been a very good servant for us and wish him all the best. However, 33 years old and only one prolific season from him so £3m is a massive fee which I'm happy to accept. My only worry is remember hearing how we'd re-invest when Wickham, Mings, Cresswell etc were all sold and we never did. £3m can buy us a couple of very good players.

Not sure about Mick trying to take so much credit for the signing of Murphy. It was pretty obvious. Apathy is definitely the wrong word to use. Maybe some people didn't like him playing wide left, that was about it. He was always a good consistent player for us, in midfield or up front.

Re: KaiKai, actually mentioned earlier thought it was strange that a player belonging to a Premiership club would be celebrating his 21st birthday watching us!...must be far better things to do.

Wonder who was responsible for releasing that story?

PenguinBlue, I don't think the whole 15,000 were there for the hoofball, maybe a few of them went to support the club they love and watch us win?
