Sears Happy With Early Season Form But Keen to Net First Goal
Thursday, 24th Aug 2017 17:17

Freddie Sears has declared himself satisfied with his own personal form during Town’s 100 per cent start to the new season — even if he is the only striker yet to score.

New boys Joe Garner and Martyn Waghorn have contributed seven between them, the latter’s four coming in a three-game sequence since following Garner south from Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

And while ex-Sunderland, Leicester and Wigan striker Waghorn has rewritten the record books by netting in three successive games for the first time in English football, David McGoldrick has also weighed in with three goals this term — two in the Caribao Cup win at Luton and another in the 2-1 league victory at Barnsley.

Sears said: “I would be lying if I said I didn’t want more goals — I want double figures every year. But sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t, and you get this every year. I’m a striker and I want to score as quickly as possible. At the moment the other boys are doing it, which is very good.

“It means we’re winning games, not drawing 0-0. I’ll just keep my head down, carry on working hard and hopefully one will fly in soon. Overall it’s going well. We’ve started well as a team and when you’re winning games everyone is playing well.

“We had a bit of a tough time last season, not picking up results, but there’s a real buzz around the club at the minute. It’s back to the atmosphere of the play-off season when I first joined the club. We’re all enjoying it and we’re all pointing in the same direction.”

Town boss Mick McCarthy has consistently backed Sears by keeping him in the team regardless of whether he is a regular marksman or not, explaining that his tremendous work rate and appetite to cover defensively is enough for him to retain his place in the starting line-up.

Sears added: “Since the gaffer brought me here I think I’ve played in most of the games. It shows he trusts me, which is a good thing, and I’m trying to repay him. If I’m not scoring I’m still contributing in other ways when I’m on the pitch.

“Of course I’d love a few more goals but there’s more to this game than scoring goals. I work hard and put a shift in, week in, week out, doing some of the dirty jobs for the team.

“All four strikers are playing and that is going to bring goals. I’m not sure it will be the case all season because there will be times when the gaffer is going to change the shape.

“But for the time being I’m just delighted to be playing and for us to be winning games. It’s a great feeling right now with everyone buzzing.

“At the minute everything is going well and it all links up quite easily. Garns and Waggy have come in and we all know what Didzy [McGoldrick] is about. That’s four front players to use. Last season we needed a bit more creativity from midfield and we’ve now got that as well.

“At the start of every season my goals target is the same — to reach double figures and the way we are playing at the minute there are definitely goals in the team.

“The midfield looks stronger and it always looks as if we are going to create chances. I just need to get on the end of a few of them.”

We don't create that many chances mate, only 12 shots on target all season!

There appears to be different opinions on here regarding Sears, based on what I've read over the last few months. You cannot question his desire or work rate, but the goals are lacking. Last year when we were desperate for goals, more so in March and April, Freddie simply did not deliver. Once all the midfielders are fit, and if the 3 'main men' carrying on banging them in for fun. I reckon Sears is destine for the bench. Great option to bring on though, and adds strength in depth.

I'd rather Freddie was in the team without scoring than out of the team! Maybe utilise his pace from the bench when other midfielders/widemen are fit, but anyone who doubts he is a key member of the team is a fool, before bemoaning at his lack of goals understand he is doing a job (and doing it well) for the team, once he is used a striker for a decent run his goals will come, and that run maybe as a supersub role, we are all aware of what a capable goal scorer he is but with Garns, Didz & Wags performing how they are to secure that first team place as a striker is a big ask at the moment! Keep doing what ya doing for us Freddie as we are far better off with you.

Kinda of the same thing cat wrote really.

Is this a different one to the one IpswichToon spotted?

No, it was me missing what the mistake was and changing it to a new one. Should all be fine now. Hopefully.
