Smith Close to Colorado Switch
Saturday, 6th Jan 2018 13:04

TWTD understands Blues defender Tommy Smith is close to joining MLS side the Colorado Rapids.

Smith, 27, joined Town at 16 after moving from New Zealand and has been a regular for much of his time at Portman Road, but has largely been behind skipper Luke Chambers and Adam Webster this season.

The All Whites international will not be involved in this afternoon’s FA Cup third round tie against Sheffield United at Portman Road with the move likely to go through this week.

Smith has made 251 starts and 17 sub appearances for Town, scoring 23 goals.

Colorado are managed by Anthony Hudson, who was New Zealand boss until November.

Yesterday, manager Mick McCarthy revealed that the Blues had made a loan enquiry to Brighton regarding centre-half Connor Goldson, who was close to joining Town in August.

The 25-year-old seems likely to join the Blues once the Seagulls have added another defender to their squad.

Meanwhile, we understand Crystal Palace have cooled in their pursuit of Blues keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Talks between the clubs have continued throughout the week but with no agreement reached regarding the overall package.

It’s believed the Eagles have turned their attention to one of their other targets with McCarthy having confirmed their interest yesterday, revealing they have a list of at least six potential targets yesterday.

Really weird unless someone is already lined up and it's really good money. I mean, I'd love us to be clearing the decks to finance the next manager but worry about this club's basic planning.

Is there a fee involved?

Will the last player to leave take McCarthy with them and switch the lights off please.

Makes you realise just how much of a company mushroom Milne is.

My gob is rather smacked by this one.

Add another CB to the shopping list, with Webster injured. Unless we're going to play one at the back and five strikers.

MM's master plan is to save us by playing himself

So we're going to replace another established player with a loanee.

What with all the contracted players being out of contract at the end of the season and the loanees returning we'll hardly have a squad...

The only left sided centre back in the first team probably the best header at the club and we're letting him go!!! Glad I'm not going today this club has lost the plot!!! Time to find something else to do with my time and money!!!!

This is going to go down very badly with the supporters. Not the best we have but a club man who's always done his best.

I dot blame smith for going. He's got the chance to win the league in a very good MLS side and MM clearly dislikes him.

Is this some kind of fire sale at town?

Time for Webber!

I'm not sure about Smith as he looks like injuries have taken their toll but would be shame he went. With Webster out we're looking a bit thin for CBs so hope MM can get replacement next week.

This is just what you expect from this awful club terrible manager owner and of course Milne.
At this rate we will not have any supporters left or team div 1 here we come best thing that could happen and get rid of these morons

I reckon McCarthy has known about this...Smith has been left out in the cold for some time, last time he played a fairly full season (2015/16) he was arguably our most consistent defender.
So if he goes to say we're a bit short in the central defender area is an understatement, but this won't worry Mick too much he'll just shuffle the defence around with players out of position to make do like he did for the first few months this season.
Disappointing if true.

McCarthy doesn't dislike him. That's nonsense.
McCarthy has been been the making of Smith, he was very average and raw until Mick took over.
That said I see no sense in getting rid and replacing with a loanee.
Sounds like the club is heading for a clearout and that includes the manager.
McCarthy's comments this week are very much ‘it's nowt to do with me'.
That would suggest he knows he's leaving and it will be someone else's problem.
My guess is he'll get us safe and an announcement will be made in April.

My flabber has never been so gasted! Please tell me this a load of rubbish. Smith is a rock in this club....we will struggle without him providing the team spirit at the club.

WTF ! really cant believe this club . 8 (EIGHT) players out with various long term injuries and we are still off loading , just unbelievable when you bear in mind McCarthy saying we are only looking at loans. perhaps we should all just give up now and let Evans take the club to hell in a hand cart

I see the usual team building exercise is in motion. The one where a new team is assembled every season at the start and disrupted but not strengthened half way through.

Tractor shark are you as idiotic as this excuse for a manager of course he doesn't want him never has always using excuses not to play him you need to get real McCarthy is a complete idiot

It was obvious there had been a fall out between MM and Tommy. This really has come out of the blue.At least we are trying to get cover, but they won't be ours so once again we are wasting money on wages I'm afraid.
As I said last week there seems to be a great deal of uncertainty within the club and I don't like the way it's going.
