Wilder: Waghorn Valuation Too Steep for Blades
Wednesday, 25th Jul 2018 08:24

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder says Town's valuation of striker Martyn Waghorn has priced the Blades out of the running for the 28-year-old, who in any case now looks set to join Derby County for £8 million.

The South Yorkshiremen made an offer of close to £5 million for Waghorn three weeks ago which was immediately rejected by Town. No further bids were made but Wilder made his continuing interest clear over the weekend.

Asked whether the price tag on Waghorn was too steep for his club, presumably prior to news of the Rams’ move breaking, Wilder told Sky Sports: "Yeah it is, without a shadow of a doubt. If the club are looking for £8 to £10 million that is not our valuation but it is obviously their prerogative - he is their player.

"We talked about it and that is where we are at. If it moves, it moves. If not, we will move on. It is such a tough market to deal in.

"A lot of clubs are really having a go for it but we are going about it in our way and hopefully we will get players that suit the strategy and structure of this club.”

Former Blues striker David McGoldrick scored the Blades’ goal as they drew 1-1 in a friendly with Inter Milan at Bramall Lane last night having signed a one-year deal earlier in the day after impressing on trial.

All I got from that was that Inter Milan were over in the UK and still not giving us that friendly they owe us!

@tractorboyjim - thought it was Lazio that owed us the friendly (as part of the Sereni deal)?

translates as "Wilder delusional about market value"

With him going public and trying to unsettle the player it's nice someone with a reasonable offer came in. I'm sure Wilder will get a nice Portman Road welcome now.

What did you expect Wilder you absolute clown!!??

£8m is great business in my opinion, we need to be realistic where we are and even if half the money could be invested in a number of young hungry progressive players that's better in the long run. Up the Town.

Wilder is an absolute weapon.

He can't afford Waghorn, and Sheff U is at best a sideways move so he's not going to agitate for the move so move on!

Actually Me Wilder, do we want to sell the player? the answer is no, why would we sell one of our better players?. Answer: make us an offer, if its up to our valuation i.e. £8 million we will see if the player wishes to move. What we won't do is let you have our player at your valuation, if you don't rate him high enough to pay that price then jog along somewhere else, when you shop in waitrose things are more expensive than aldi.
This is a sellers market not a buyers, for too many years we have been desperate to sell our players. Keep hold of Waghorn, up his contract, unless of course Hurst doesn't want him, and would rather wheel and deal. Remember the lessons of Daryl Murphy, don't sell you top goalscorer a week before the start of the season.

Wasn't bothered about this guy at first but he is starting to be annoying. I expect he will still be talking about Waghorn long into the season. Yawn.

Gutted we are selling our best player by a country mile but if he wants to leave then what else can we do.It's great that we are signing young hungry players but they need to be complimented by one or two experienced heads. Enthusiasm will certainly be refreshing to see on the pitch but could soon be quashed with a couple of heavy defeats. Its going to be interesting to see it all unfold this season and how PH adapts to Championship football.

If there's any good news to take from Waghorn leaving then it's that he's not joining Sheffield United and that idiot Wilder!

First off will be gutted to see him go.

Secondly who could blame him for wanting to move, he will probably get 4 x the salary that he is currently on. Remember ITFC are just an employer to him, he isn't a supporter. How many of us wouldn't move for a massive salary increase?

If we can get 8m for someone we paid 200k for then that is excellent business. Providing a good proportion of the money is reinvested in the team.

We can probably see why Lampard took over at Derby now. FL: “Marcus I will be looking at bringing in a quality strike partner for MW, how much can I spend? ME: “sorry old bean, we will be selling Waggy and you can coach one of the youngsters.” FL: “Riiiiiiiiiiiiight...” (door quietly shuts as he walks slowly backwards out of office).

FL: “Mr Morris, how much money can I have?” MMorris : “as much as you want.” FL: “give me that pen!”

Innit Josh.

Wilder knows for a fact Waghorn wants out of sinking ship ITFC where he could get a move and probably double his wage straight off the bat.

We may not like this, and it's very very naughty from Wilder however he's certainly giving that game a very very good play.

Sheff Utd far more likely to gain promotion than us. Fair play, bit of ambition.

aaah I feel so sorry for Wilder as he only has £5m to spend on a player!
Talk about financial hardships :)
What about financial fairplay??

Currie10,
What makes you say Town "are a sinking Ship".Do you have evidence to back up your theory.?

'great business' - that's all we ever seem to talk about, it would be 'great business' if all the funds were then put back into the squad not just sound bites from the CEO or owner which doesn't materialise.

By the way we paid near £900K for him not £200...

Lets be realistic, even though Waggy is one of our better players £8 million is a figure I dont think we can turn down. He had a great season last year and will he replicate that this season..... probably not. Lets get the money and let Hursty invest that back into the squad, he is finding all this young talent in the lower leagues. Reckon he will be able to get 4 players in with that money and in turn should make us stronger as a whole.

The only takeaway from this piece for me is that Sheff Utd plays Inter Milan in pre season and we play Crawley Barnet and Co.

Reading comments in here is staggering. By any measure converting £200,000 to £8M in one year is pretty impressive. ME will surely be aware that after turning down £7M for McGoIdrick it looked bad in hindsight and won't want to make that mistake again. Nobody knows if we'd get the same return in performance this year. Sadly in the modern game this is how it is.

Sad to see him go. However other than last season his only other season of note seems to have been his first at Rangers (although that does not take into consideration any assists). There may be a reason Rangers let him go so cheaply. Maybe last season was a bit of a freak. Dozzell might be able to deliver the dead balls but not sure about the goals.
