Lambert: Loan Move a Good Challenge for McGuinness
Wednesday, 23rd Sep 2020 14:58

Boss Paul Lambert says Town's new loan signing Mark McGuinness impressed him hugely when skippering Arsenal’s U23s in the recent EFL Trophy tie between the clubs at Portman Road.

The 19-year-old, who is with the Blues for the season, was already a player Lambert was aware of prior to the game and that his display that night caught his eye.

"His name was mentioned a few weeks prior to it," Lambert told the club site. "We had a chance to see him close up when he played against us. I thought he was excellent.

"I think anybody in the stadium that night would’ve seen that the young lad is a really good player. He’s got a big presence about him so I’m really happy.

"He looked a really good leader as well for somebody so young. His no-nonsense approach was really good. He’s comfortable on the ball. It’s a good challenge for him to take on and it should be a beneficial loan move for him."

The Blues boss says McGuinness’s signing gives the Blues more competition at the heart of their defence.

"James [Wilson] and Toto [Nsiala] have been absolutely brilliant for us," he added. "They hold it at the minute. They’re playing really well and Mark knows that which is good.

"Woolfy [Luke Woolfenden] will need to push to get in as well. That’s important that the two lads who are playing at the minute know that they are in good form and playing well but they also know that they have players breathing down their necks to get in the team.

"It’ll raise their game as well, knowing that they have really good players behind them."

Why is it, Wolfy always seems to be mentioned almost as an afterthought recently, when I've heard him spoken of in Lambert's interviews?

A striker who can hold the ball up but also score goals would be nice too please Mr. Lambert, if I'm not being too greedy.

Hi everyone, this is my 1st post.......yay lol.
Great to see Lambert bringing in young hungry players which will bode well for competition at the back ,great news!!!!.
I understand Lambert is not everyone's cup of tea but at the end of the day he is our manager, nothing is gonna change that and I for one believe he has learnt big lessons from last season and is probably one of the best managers in league 1, so if we can all have a bit of belief and posotivty I think we will get promoted this season.
Not looking forward to bluearmy81 post about this tho.....lol

Sorry Brixton... but he's spoken of him in that way since before any of them had played - along the lines of 'he's got to work much harder etc to be included...' (paraphrased), when last season he must've been one of the first on the team sheet?

No mention of Chambers as a cb - clearly KVY is out for a good while then.
Hello Hoppy and Brixton, strange place this, I've got lost and found the comments section.

hoppy - I think you are looking too deeply into it. He was simply saying these two are there now and doing a good job. Woolfy is out with an injury which looks like it might be take a while to heal from, but at least he referenced him!

My view to make sense of this is that WoolfY and/or KVY must be out at least for the medium term and Ndaba also out. Clearly McGuinness a good quality player with potential, but I think Woolfy could go all the way - more so than Downes - so must play when fit regardless of others. Ndaba also looked good and think we should have continued his development as well to learn from Nsiala, Wilson and Chambers, but presumably he goes out on loan now when everybody else is over the injuries.............

I am really pleased about this signing, he sounds a quality young player with the attributes to help us get promoted and, in time, to make it at the top level. It's far better to borrow a player from Arsenal than Preston like last season!

Hippy he has said nothing negative here on Woolfy. Rightly so he's just saying the two lads playing have done well so Woolf will have to force his way back in (Which I am sure he will do). He's hardly going to say as soon as Woolf is back Wilson is out. Great motivation for Wilson that when he is needed! Competition for places is great news! Woolf by his own admission isn't the best at motivating himself in pre-Season ( read his quotes from last season).

What happens in the middle when KVY is fit the skipper stated in his post match interview after the Bristol game that nobody is guaranteed a place every week.

Welcome Lovemyclub and a good first post. Most people on here are balanced with their posts but a few still hold Evans responsible for where we are. Perhaps they are right but constantly looking back and slagging off fans for giving their support is not what being a supporter is about. So far so good this season on many fronts with Lambert learning from last year, Evans giving him backing and two league wins. More to come with a young talented squad and a few older pros. Onwards and upwards !

Very good point therein61, however I am getting concerned if we shall ever see KVY again anytime soon and if he does return will he be the same player as he was before his unfortunate injury?

Lovemyclub74 welcome to the wonderful world of posting on TWTD, it is a very well run site with balanced opinion and very often decent debate.
As you rightly point out, indirectly, there are the odd ball posters who tend to be irksome in the extreme and comment with little intellect or basic common sense, but they are the minority.
However I too welcome the signing of this young player, I have never heard of him before, I have not seen him play but PL certainly is a good judge of a player, so irrespective of what people's opinion is of PL's long term future I do feel that this will prove a very positive signing, which has been backed financially.
So far so good, long way to go but fingers crossed.

These moves are always worthwhile if there isn't a clause in the contract about playing AKA Norris
Lambert needs to be able to stick by his promise that if you win the shirt it's yours to loose, not to have to play at least X amount of games
Also gives us great opportunity to retain credibility with clubs higher up the ladder that we can look after and develop players
It's a win win if our hand itsnt forced at some point

Totally agree cakeman regards his injury and concerns but Freddie Sears has come back from similar and is looking good so far i feel we rush players back to early at times.

I welcome this signing but I don't see the benefit to the loaning club or the player if he doesn't regularly play in our first team. It would be like El Miz sitting on the bench for Cambridge - pointless.

Look at Maitland-Niles, he regularly played for us (until his mum allegedly had a massive rant at Mick McCarthy) and then broke into the Arsenal first team after a few years.

We've been weak at the centre of our defence for years now. Nothing has changed much from last season and our present centre backs will get found out against better opposition. Lambert will bring McGuinness in when our centre backs make even the slightest mistake. Think we still need a big physical presence in midfield .
