TWTD understands Town are closing in on the loan signing of Middlesbrough left-back Hayden Coulson.

It was reported yesterday that the Blues had won the race for the 23-year-old and we understand the season-long switch should be confirmed in the next few days. Sunderland and Championship Luton had also been linked.

Gateshead-born Coulson came through the ranks at Boro before spending time out on loan at St Mirren and Cambridge United, both in 2018/19.

Coulson, who also plays wide on the left of midfield, broke into the Teessiders’ first team at the start of 2019/20 and has now gone on to make 28 starts and 21 sub appearances, scoring once.

He is contracted to Boro until 2023, however, with his involvement having been limited last season his departure is little surprise.

Town have already signed one left-back this summer, Matt Penney, who joined after leaving Sheffield Wednesday, but with Stephen Ward having been released at the end of the season and Myles Kenlock among those told he can move on this summer and currently training with the U23s, the addition of a second left-sided full-back has looked on the cards.

supasmiler71 added 13:36 - Jul 21 A really good signing. I wouldn't get too fixated about it only being a loan. For next season he is an Ipswich Town player. We will need plenty of new faces to compete and be successful in the Championship next season if, as we all hope, we go up this year anyway.

Would've preferred him to join permanently but if he's the best player we can sign in that position then bring him in by any means possible. I'm desperate to see us sign a couple of centre backs now.

It doesn't alter the fact that if we don't get 2 centre half's, one of which must be an experienced leader, i regret that we're going nowhere again this season. It beggars belief that it's not been addressed as yet. An injury to either of the untrustworthy Woolfenden or Nsiala leaves us with a problem.

Young player with Championship experience, gives us a chance to look properly at him and hopefully turn it permanent if we go up (or even if we don't). My understanding is loans do not count towards the wage cap either so win win

They also don't see him as a left back and say he should be playing more up the field. They are also concerned that he may stay with us and not return to Teesside...#COYB

runaround added 15:54 - Jul 21 A loan is worth it if you can get a player of better ability than you can afford permanently. Hadn't heard much of Coulson before the interest by Warnock clearly rates him & he can cover 2 positions we are short in so hopefully we get it over the line
