McKenna: Humphreys Loan Success No Surprise
Friday, 8th Nov 2024 16:23

Town boss Kieran McKenna says no one at Portman Road is surprised that midfielder Cameron Humphreys is making such a big impression during his loan spell with League One leaders Wycombe Wanderers.

The 21-year-old was voted man of the match following the 5-0 win at Stockport County on Tuesday, a result which took the Chairboys to the top of the table.

Today, manager Matt Bloomfield, like Humphreys a graduate of the Town academy, was named the division’s Manager of the Month for October.

Humphreys has now made nine starts and five sub appearances, scoring three times, since joining the Buckinghamshire club in August.

“It's been excellent,” McKenna said when asked for his thoughts on the Colchester-born youngster’s spell at Adams Park.

“I was talking to Conor Chaplin about it yesterday and I think the surprise levels in the dressing room are really, really low. I think everyone internally here was clear about how ready Cameron was and how he was performing and training.

“He just needed that opportunity to go and play a week in, week out. And he's grabbing it with both hands at the moment and the team's doing well.

“He's helping the team doing well and, of course, the team doing well helps a young player out on loan, so it's very positive. I'm sure there'll be some ups and downs, but he's having a really good experience.”

Quizzed on whether he would like Humphreys to make a step up to the Championship in January, McKenna said: “It's not something that we're discussing at the moment, to be honest. There's a lot of football to be played in the season. There's a lot of football to be played between now and January.

“And I think the priority is that he's out, he’s playing week in, week out in a good side and that's the first step and a big positive. And that's where everyone's focus is for now.”

Only seen the highlights of the games he's scored in as like to keep an eye on a few loanees and ex players including Harness and Jackson at Derby, I want them all to do well.

From the goals and some of the glimpses of seeing Cam play, looks like his confidence is starting to come out of him. Always thought maybe at Town you can tell he's a bit of a shy kid, don't want to step out of line and maybe that in turn made him play very passively being too scared to make a mistake. Hopefully his form continues and one day be back playing in the squad or as a starter!

Also looking forward to Baggott's progress finally since he's now back from his injury!

A player ive always liked with the ability to spot a pass early but has always lacked the confidence to express himself but has started to do that at Wycombe. He's not a quick player but as Brian Clough once said the ball can move faster than anyone can run. Still has a future at Ipswich if he can develop his game physically. Would luv to see him succeed at Town he's definitely got the ability.
