Keane: I Wasn't Looking For a Fight
Thursday, 12th Dec 2024 11:41

Ex-Town boss Roy Keane has given his side of the story regarding the incident in which he clashed with a Blues supporter following the 1-1 draw with his former club Manchester United at Portman Road last month.

In scenes reminiscent of the final game of Keane’s disastrous 20-month tenure as Blues boss, the January 2011 1-0 defeat to another of his old sides Nottingham Forest (pictured above), the former Republic of Ireland skipper reacted to fans in the lower tier of the West Stand.

During the exchange, which was caught on film, Keane, 53, offered to meet one of his detractors in the car park.

Quizzed on the contretemps on The Stick to Football podcast, Keane dismissed claims that he was challenging the supporter to a fight.

“What happens when we’re doing matches and the analysis is happening at the end of the match when fans can be up or down, whatever emotions they are feeling – and people think they can abuse you, and it seems to be we’re supposed to accept that,” he said.

“I went over to him twice – I said, ‘No problem, if you want to abuse me or if you want a discussion with me, well I’m working’. I went over to him twice at different stages and he was swearing in front of kids.

“I said, ‘If you want to see me afterwards’ – and people thought I was asking him for a [fight] – I said, ‘I’ll see you in the car park’. Where else was I going to see him?

“I am not offering somebody out. I’m 53 years of age with five kids and two grandkids. I’m not looking for a fight.”

Keane would have battered him anyway.
Well done Keano.

Embarrassing from our so called fan.

Agreed, it's not often I would side with Roy Keane but you've got to be a proper whopper to yell abuse about something that happened 13, 14 years ago.

I don't really care about this either way, but to say "I'll see you in the car park" is NOT a euphemism for "Do you want a scrap?" is utterly disingenuous, and analogous with that which comes out of the back end of a fully grown and naturally endowed male bovine.

Couldn’t disagree more. This man is a coward and a bully who hides behind his fame and his microphone. When asked in an interview what his biggest regret in football was he said “taking the job at Ipswich” he used it totally for his own gain, never gave a hoot about our club and has often spoken down about ITfC. He was part of our history that many of us would like to forget and his behaviour and attitude towards management players and football in general is disgraceful. I have absolutely no idea why he is on my tv screen and his views are astonishingly out of date with the current game. If any of my employees acted like this they would be sacked immediately but I suspect SKY is too scared to do the right thing.

We all saw the video and he did offer him out. However, RK was working and the "fan" doesn't have the right to abuse him and is an embarrasment to our club on what was generally a positive day for our club globally.

Not great by the fan but utter nonsense from Keane as well. In every other walk of life "I'll see you outside in the car park" is a challenge to a fight. And the idea that he "wasn't angry" is nonsense too (which Ian Wright and the rest of the panel rightly laughed at). We've all seen the clip, Roy. You're kidding no-one.

what do you lot think it was like to work for an owner like Evans? He was ordered to sell Jordan Rhodes so that plonker could do a pump and dump on Connor ruining his career!!

Had to move out of the bottom of the West Stand, some of the weirdest ‘fans’ ever. Went and sat down there a few weeks ago and was exactly the same. They’re people from Pettaugh, Charsfield and Monk Soham, you know the sort. :-)

Anyone that knows this so called fan knows he is trouble, banned from several pubs around town for being a troublemaker, he should receive a ban from Town for his threatening behaviour and swearing in front of kids .His kind we can certainly do without,he is a twisted old biggot. I'm not a fan of Roy Keane but wouldn't have minded seeing him give this coward a good thick lip.
