Brentford Linked With McKenna Move Should Frank Depart For Spurs
Sunday, 8th Jun 2025 13:53

Town boss Kieran McKenna would be targeted by Brentford should Thomas Frank depart for Tottenham Hotspur, according to various reports.

Dane Frank is the favourite to replace Ange Postecoglou with the North Londoners, the Australian having parted ways with the club he led to the Europa League on Friday.

Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Marco Silva of Fulham have also been linked but with Frank’s representatives understood to have opened talks with Spurs. There is believed to be a £10 million release clause in Frank’s Brentford contract.

The Bees in turn are widely reported to be eyeing Town manager McKenna as Frank’s potential replacement, despite the Blues’ relegation back to the Championship after one season.

McKenna, who was at last night’s Fabio Wardley fight at Portman Road alongside chairman and CEO Mark Ashton, signed a new Town deal last summer, which runs to the summer of 2028, following talks with Brighton, who he came very close to joining, Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Northern Irishman committed his future to the Blues on a couple of occasions towards the end of the season, but could well be tempted by a swift return to the Premier League, having also been near to taking over at Crystal Palace during Town’s Championship promotion campaign, were a club to make an approach.

Brentford’s head of coaching, Justin Cochrane, who has also been tipped to take over from Frank should he depart, is a close friend of McKenna’s from their time working at Spurs and at Old Trafford.

Having had a nervy summer while McKenna assessed his options last year, Town fans could well have another edgy spell this close season if Frank does move on to Spurs and the Bees look towards the Blues boss.

The 39-year-old took over at Portman Road in December 2021 and led Town to back-to-back promotions from League One and then the Championship before relegation from the Premier League in 2024/25.

Firstly, Not quite sure that Brentford will match the contract that he’s on at Ipswich. Secondly, he’s already stated that he’s happy here and I think his relationship with MA is built on trust and loyalty.

It was quite clear that Mr.McKenna is not yet ready for the Premier League based on our performance last season. Whilst the potential is there, he needs to develop his skills further at Championship level. Promotion to the Premier league came too soon. To win only four matches all season is just not good enough and any one trying to lure him away may well be wary of this. There is little doubt that he failed at Premier League level despite the backing he had from the owners.

Whatever happens get it done quickly so we know where we are, going into the new season. Players won’t sign if they are not sure who the manager will be and we’ve got some holes in the squad to fill!

Oh ffs, just hurry and get it done, then we can all move on. I'm really not fussed with all this crap now.

I think McKenna would be on a hiding to nothing at Brentford Thomas Frank has probably taken them as far as they can go . If McKenna was to turn them into a top six or eight side i would be very surprised.

This is the not the right opportunity for McKenna. If Brighton came in now, you can't argue with him going, but he rightfully, respectfully took us into this season knowing how tough it was going to be.

If he is to move, he has to choose wisely, and Brentford for me, is a club that will run out of steam soon. The club he picks has to be on the way up, and for me, we will be on the march for the next few years whilst the ownership group backs up. You have to ride those waves.

McKenna is a Novice at PL level, and showed it numerous times last season.
Frankly, I doubt he'd last a season at Brentford, and would have a different kind of support he has at Town.
Plus, ironically, his stock will increase if he stays and shows loyalty, as opposed to go fail again in the PL...
Still, such is the money at that level, one manager job and he could be set up for life, even if he fails, if he fancies that ;)

All I hope is whatever happens it doesn't interfere with the players we are after now and the build up to next season.
We have a fair amount of rebuilding due to players leaving whether sold, loans or just allowed to leave.
Favourites in the eyes of the bookies mean nothing. They are just money making establishments and they wouldn't be in existence if more punters won than lost.
Sadly it will now be that the manager and players will be touted not necessarily on a the failure of the season just gone, but by our rise the two previous seasons and the reason for failure whilst open to debate was partly due to over achieving and the need to have a balance between trying to keep in the Premier League with one eye on what would happen if relegate and being left with players on big contracts who were worth less than we paid for them.
Gladly that's not the case but with it comes the added problem of some being sourced by promoted clubs and also established Premier clubs.

Do contracts not mean anything? If we let him go, is there a payment involved - can someone explain it to me please?

I would imagine there is quite a hefty release clause in McKenna's contract too. If he does go, I hope doesnt, but if he does, I would love Danny Rohl to take over.

It does make me laugh that so many people on here see a headline and react to it without thinking logically.

We can’t afford for this to go on all summer. It will disrupt our plans and hinder, what must be a promotion season. Whether that’s McKenna or another manager, the expectation is simple. An immediate return to the PL.

As for McKenna, if he gets an offer it’s a predicament. Zero points at home in 2025 is clearly very poor, so if he gets another PL job offer on the back of that, you may argue he’d be right to take it. The other doubt in his mind is likely the what if we make a poor start to the season. Hope we don’t but if we did, his stock would surely tumble pretty quickly.

I’d like KM to stay, but I think if an offer comes in for a PL job, all things considered he would likely take it and probably should.

I don't believe for a moment that he was close to joining Brighton or Palace. And the idea of going to Brentford who have already hit their ceiling is ludicrous.
Ipswich Town have far more prospects of long-term success than any club outside the top six of the Premier League. Why would he give that up for, at best, a sideways move to a smaller club?

Brentford!!!! Sorry they have no history of significance. KMc's family is settled, has limited Prem experience of managing. For the remainder of his contract he can hone his skills. Brentford if they are sensible will shop elsewhere, Thomas Frank is not really a good fit for Spurs. The truth is that football management is like a game of Russian Roulette - winning cups meaning nothing to owners, success is a double edge sword.

I'll be clear about this. I've been and still am, a fan of KM, but I will say something my Mother often used to say. " There's as big a fish in the sea, that ever came out ". I'd be sad to see him go if it happened, and I saw the " rumour " before it got on here, but it is going to happen at some point, as all managers leave, one way or another. I'll just trust MA & Co, to come up with another gem if it did!

Having stated quite clearly that he would be staying next season and is committed to the Club, it would be extremely disappointing and not a little annoying if he were to leave. He was asked a straight and could have easily have said that he had no plans to do blah blah.

I think @armchaircritic59 where you are wrong is that sometimes there is a match so well aligned that you cannot reproduce it elsewhere. McKenna has it all at town because he will always have started from League one. That kind of backing you cannot buy, it is why he did not get sacked last year whilst Martin and Cooper did. You cannot buy that sort of support, especially when yiu are learning on the job.

He has a young family, they are settled and happy, he WILL go down as one of our best three managers ever, but he needs more time to build that team, just like Robson and Ramsey before him.

I believe in him, i think we all do, and he knows it too.

He is hardly a tactical genius! If he goes, he goes.

well KM needs to state his intentions asap and put this to bed for the fans and and surely he must feel he has some loyalty to his employers they have given him everything he has asked for! did he have a pay cut clause in his contract i wonder?

if he goes i really hope he achieves back to back relegations!

Atty. He has never said"categrically" thst he is staying next season. What he said was planning on being here. Thats a bit different. But this could change the situation. With sone1 in nthe pl wanting him.
To those saying he was poor in the pl? No1,would have, kept us up. Easy to say he was backed with money, but we still had less than anyone else to spend, thus limiting the stature of player we could acquire. And yes, he made some misktakes. And he will have learnt from that.
Hopefully he will stay, but if he is to go it needs to happen quickly. For those suggesting Danny Rohl? Not sure on that. Lost more games than hes won at Wednesday. For me Carrick would fit the criteria of manager Ashton tends to go for.

Reading all of the comments on here, we clearly have some nuggets (probably from up the road), who have registered on this site to talk rubbish and try to get under the skin of the rest of us. My views (for what they are worth alongside all of those others are this): I do not think KM will leave this summer, he had Chelsea, Brighton and Man Utd temping him this time last season and didn't choose to go (the £120k a week contract put pay to that), so if he said no to them, why a season on would he go to Brentford? Secondly, I think he is more than settled here and knows that he has the backing of the club and the fan base for the amazing job he has done so far. I went to every home game as I do every season and we were not a million miles away from those sides that have had a few years in the PL and have been able to ensure that they have a strong bench to influence games in the later stages, this is where we fell short. Those Turkey munchers up the road and so quick to tell me that we spent £140 million, but clearly they don't know that we took a squad that was largely assembled in League 1 all the way to the top flight. We simply had to seriously invest, but we could (if we were allowed too) have spent twice that to ensure that we had a side capable of staying up. It important now how we start next season and ensure that we build momentum early on. I believe in KM, his ability to build attractive football from the back, working through the various phases of the pitch is exceptional. Sides in the Championship (including the Turkey munchers), already fear playing us with the large amount of proven Championship talent we now have within our squad. I believe in the club to find the right players, yes a decent and proven striker is a must, so is getting the two in the center of midfield sorted quickly. Finally, to those who are posting on here from up the road, please go away, you are boring, leave this sight to fans of the real Pride of East Anglia as I am sure we will prove next season.

Probably his last chance to get a Premier League job if for whatever reason things don't go well next season. I think he might well jump this time.

Too many experts on here as usual, I watched every game and the Premier league sides were all bigger, stronger, faster and FOREIGN. You can’t blame McK for that.
Looking forward to the new season and so are many of us.
