Derby Linked With Skipper Morsy
Sunday, 13th Jul 2025 10:11

Derby County are reportedly eyeing Blues skipper Sam Morsy.

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon on his Patreon page, the Rams are keen on the 33-year-old, as are clubs overseas with a move from Portman Road possible should the right offer be received.

Morsy has been a key man in Kieran McKenna’s team since the Blues boss took charge in December 2021 having been signed by Paul Cook, who previously managed him at Chesterfield and Wigan, late in the preceding summer transfer window from Middlesbrough.

However, the Egypt international found himself on the bench on occasion during the latter stages of 2024/25 and may well find himself out of the XI in the season ahead with Town set to confirm the signing of Azor Matusiwa from Rennes, who plays a similar role.

Asked in May whether he expects to remain with the Blues during the season ahead, Morsy said: “As it stands, I’ve still got another year left on my contract.”

Wolverhampton-born Morsy, who posted a personal highlights reel from last season on social media on Friday, has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in previous transfer windows, although at the time dismissed those claims.

Sam Morsy played well in the Premiership for the Town and was spectacular in the Championship. There is no more popular player with the fans. He is a key player for us to get promoted again in the new season. Derby would be a big step down for him. Stay with us Sam!

I’d be surprised and disappointed if he left. Of course at 33, he’s in the twilight of his career but he clearly looks after himself physically, and still has a lot to offer, both on and off the pitch as club captain.

Sounds like he’d be open to go if there’s no new deal. 34 soon. When Paul brought him and Chaplin to the club, it helped change our entire culture.

They’re leaders, competitors, winners. There’s a right decision (financially and even in football terms now) and then there’s the prospect of losing your heartbeat, the figurehead of everything positive in those back to back seasons.

Lots of off the field roles available…., one last dance and a coaching role (maybe).

Don’t see it happening. Can’t imagine they’ll be offering enough to make it worth losing his experience and presence in the dressing room, even if he isn’t starting every week.

Would be highly surprised if goes to a possible rival in Derby, who are rebuilding nicely under their new manager. . He still has all the attributes to be a key squad player for us next season.

I guess you have to look at it from his point of view, assuming we go up I don't see him getting a new contract in the prem due to age. Also he hasn't played week in, week out of late and again at his age will want to be playing. Derby seem to be going for it and a chance to link up with a few old friends. Couldn't blame if he did go but really hope we can get one more year from him.

He has easily got another season in those legs. Especially in the Championship. He should see his contract out at town.

I really hope there’s nothing in this. Morsy has been key over the last few successful seasons - both on and off the pitch - and seems to epitomise the attitude and desire that have helped make us successful. We should avoid wholesale changes if we can and the midfield is already looking potentially totally changed. I think he will be key for us, so fingers crossed.

There is no question that Sam would have another great season with us, but if we were to get promoted, we would be in a worse position than we were at the start of last season. Samy was pivotal to our double promotion both on the pitch and off. Our tactics revolve around our defensive CM and we need to get in new players that can drive us forward both this season and the next. I am not sure whether Samy would be happy to play second fiddle and deserves a big final pay day if he chooses to go abroad. An ITFC legend whatever he decides…

Important to keep him for me to set the standards for the new midfield. He'll be involved in most games and has been so robust and so regularly available. I think it probably suits him being 34 soon not to play 90 minutes every week. He'll most likely play high numbers anyway.

Has been inspirational for us since his arrival, But here is the But if Town do go and get top level players this summer and Sam wants to play every week and not be a squad player then decisions will needed to be made its a wait and see game.

If he does want to go, and he may with only one year on his contract left, then I am sure it will be with all best wishes and thanks for the last 3 years.

His main aim is to get us back to the Prem. Maybe a couple of seasons in the Saudi league. This is just his agent trying to create contract talks or a junior sports journalist trying to disrupt our new season preps. If anything, is more likely going to work as an Ipswich coach in a few years.

Himself and his family are settled in this area, Derby would struggle to match his wages as club captain, the only move which would benefit him would be a 3 year deal in Saudi Arabia, otherwise I view this as lazy opportunist Journalism.

Midfield is currently our weakest area we need to make sure we have adequate replacements signed up first if Morsy moves on

He's definitely got another good season left in him...hope he stays.

With Jens, Phillips and Luongo already departing the club, do we really want to find four replacements if Sam also left? Midfield is a very key area and currently looks extremely weak. Can’t afford to lose Sam in my opinion.

Great I’ll help him pack even drop him off if he wants. Let’s be honest Morsy just slows the game down every time he gets the ball and as he is so slow he is booked way to often so is either suspended or on the edge of it so does even less in a game. We need someone who won’t stop and constantly pass sidewards or backwards he couldn’t cut it in the PL so let’s look forwards not back to the fact he did well in league 1!

Why would we let him go to a rival? Doesn't make sense

From a sentimental point of view would love him to be here for next season, but we will have to move some bodies out to make way for incoming players, if he were to go what an impact he’s had on our club. One of the best signings in the last 25 years.

Derby signing players in their mid 30’s so fits their criteria!
