Harry Redknapp quote on 10:30 - Apr 21 with 2786 views | Reuser_is_God | Yeah I'd agree with that. The problem now is that the quality of player available on a free transfer is not as high as it was 3/4 years ago, clubs are tying them down to get fees for them.

If you could get promotion on the cheap, he wouldn't know how to do it. I'd love to see him go down with Brum (although I don't have a problem with them in fact)

Really? He's just described exactly what MM was, rightly, lauded for. People hate Redknapp & just react in the same way, regardless of what he says.

The key difference being that Redknapp would actually build a half decent side.

Mick got us into the play offs once and that's more or less the only time a side has made the play offs without spending money on fees in the past 5 years. It's very difficult to pick players up for nothing and build a competitive side at this level, that's why the league table and spending league table tend to have a correlation most years.

Yes & maybe he's citing what MM done as his reason for saying it can be done?

One side out of twenty making the play offs without spending would suggest that it's very difficult, which is the exact opposite of what he's said. I won't hold it against him though, he's just not very bright.

Difference is MM has some history of pulling sides together on small budgets and building sides greater than the sum of their parts. 'Arry has a history of signing 'bits of quality' which are more often loose canons and form an expensively assembled dysfunctional teams which are weaker than the sum of their parts. Also, 'Arry isn't as well versed in Championship football as he thinks he is, he certainly doesn't have the experience of a Warnock or McCarthy. I think he's setting himself up for a fall here (and as other have said) repeating the same mistake as Roy Keane

...wads of cash he won't. Even when he did sign players for free he was paying them over the odds and bunging their agents millions under the table.

This. Clearly, if you think £20m a season isn't a fortune, it's possible to be competitive at that level of spending. Harry also has the advantage over many other managers of knowing lots of people in the game and the kind of contacts who will loan him good young players.

No it wasn't. He got two relatively well funded sides, where fans had limited expectations, promoted and struggled badly at three clubs which had higher expectations and weren't in the best shape when he was appointed.

Bradford weren't swimming in cash when he got them promoted. Polar opposite infact. Revisionism in its highest form. Wigan, if I remember correctly, opted for lower league players to get them up.
Harry Redknapp quote on 07:49 - Apr 22 with 1998 views | Keaneish | Given what Harry's spent at other clubs, his idea of "not spending fortunes" is very different to other clubs like us. However, in the main i agree with him. Success can be achieved without paying huge hefty transfer fees but a healthy wage bill helps.

Harry Redknapp quote on 08:15 - Apr 22 with 1935 views | itfcbam | First and foremost Redknapp is a fantastic salesman. Over time he has pursuaded his chairman to part with money the club in reality can't afford. He can though attract players, but at what cost to the club? He is also clever enough to know when to jump ship. Look at how Portsmouth ended up financially ruined. Yes he won the FA cup with them but left them with tremendous debt. Southampton weren't exactly left in great shape either. He is though loved by the media and with him around things certainly won't be dull but it's a fair sized risk.

That's utter nonsense. He was backed massively by their chairman as he was at Wigan and pretty much every club he goes to, or doesn't take the job. Read this. http://www.wsc.co.uk/the-archive/32-Managers/4843-jewell-is-no-gem
