Rats in flats 18:24 - Dec 12 with 10538 viewsunbelievablue

My mate has a rat in his flat and doesn't know how best to get rid. Any ideas on the types of poison or traps that might be most effective? I was round the other night and I could hear it in the walls (at least I think it was in the walls) and behind cupboards.

It's not the best flat for making rat proof, given it's above perhaps the dirtiest kebab shop in SE London, with a serious lack of skirting and various holes in roofs and walls.

Other than 'move asap', any tips?

Send your mate off down to a shop like Countrywide.....kind of farming/countryside shop that sells STUFF

Stuff like Barbour jackets and saddles for horses, chainsaws and strong cider and sheep worming pills

Or a good hardware shop

And get him to buy some Rat Poison. And some latex gloves and a rat feeding station if he has a dog or cat

Then, when Rodents have eaten said poison they find a comfortable spot and expire.

And decompose. And smell. A lot

Maybe a trap might be better.....

Sonic repellers do actually work very well - esp this, I found (sorry about the store! he may be able to find elsewhere)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01IBDS9PA?aaxitk=Chepuw72.2ZbNFAQnYzk9A&pd_rd_i=B01

It just drives them away, probably back into the kebab shop in his case ...

Or just google for ultrasonic rat deterrents, there's at least one comparison site I think.

He could also take a look at this
https://www.earthkind.com/pest/whats-the-best-rat-repellent-see-the-top-methods-

I think the toxic powders work well if he can stand it and doesn't have pets - rats don't like having dirty feet, and lick it off ...

If he has a dog, he should make sure its leptospirosis booster jab is up to date.

had a Rat but they are very clever and usual traps dont work. I had to find the hole where it was coming in from under the kitchen units and had to barricade it up with chicken wire and plastered over it.

That was only way as poison didn't take and apparently if it does and they eat it, they will crawl away and die leaving a god awful smell for weeks that doesn't go away.

Never tried sonic repellant? exterminator tried numerous things that all didn't work so they were a waste of time but spent numerous hours talking about how clever rats were.

The way to get rid of a rat is a dog. A dog will get hold of it and kill it in 5 seconds. You can't be living in a place with a rat as they are pure vermin, like the dirty fox it carries deadly diseases.

Tell your friend to get onto the landlord and demand they sort it out. If not, then find somewhere else to live as the landlord will be n breach of contract.

I've not seen this, but are you sure it's risotto he cooks?

Forgive me if I'm sticking my nose in and I'm wrong.

My guess would have been ratatouille.

Apologies in advance.

Peanut butter laced with a ground up glass (or wire wool). Works every time.
