£11m spent on finding Maddie 08:50 - Mar 27 with 28016 viewshype313

Why does this case in particular get huge funding, as opposed to the Ben Needham case?

You’ll get lots of controversial replies to this I’m sure, but I’d suggest a few reasons this case in particular has received lots of attention and funding:

- Nature of disappearance means possibility that she is still alive
- Incident happened abroad (obviously Ben Needham was the same but differs to other missing person cases)
- Events a complete mystery. I suspect with Ben Needham the authorities had a good idea what happened and who may be responsible for a while, with Madeleine that doesn’t seem to be the case (insert conspiracy theory here)
- Madeleine very photogenic
- Well to do family involved, very adept with the media and generating publicity
- In line with the above, lots of press exposure

I do agree with the general point though - this case does seem to have received an extraordinary amount of resource, which almost certainly could have been used more effectively elsewhere

Beyond absurd, especially when the police are apparently taking days to respond to 999 calls. Whoever authorised this should be held to account & explain why it's been the best use of £11m.

Because the parents are posh.

You aren’t telling me if this was a council estate kid from Liverpool that there would even be a tenth of the money thrown at the case.

PR and the court of public opinion keep this one rolling on.

I'd put more into the missing RAF chap and Ben Needham.

People are too scared to say 'No' for fear of getting hit with the 'you don't care about a young girly' stick.

If the parents had given a damn, they would not have left her alone and gone out with their mates!

(I'm Ok with getting hit, I quite like it so long as it's on my bum).

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Is this the guy that used to sleep in dustbins or another one? If it's the bin lad then there's a very sad and likely outcome (if not proven, granted).

All evidence suggests he ended up falling asleep in a bin and was lost in a landfill site on that case.

His phone tracker saying his last active place (overnight) being in that bin is a sad but crucial bit of evidence as someone known to sleep in bins when he was drunk.

Do we know whether the funding is disproportionately larger than other cases? Or is that simply how much any extended, complex enquiry costs nowadays?

The McKeague investigation ran up expenses of £2.1m in just 16 months, for just the one force in a fairly small geographical area. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-42808142

There was also some data stating one of the rubbish disposal lorries that would have been collecting was over typical/average weight when it got to the landfill site too I believe.

I'd be genuinely interested to know if other missing children got this level of funding, and "operations" that lasted this long.

I don't think they would. I also think that McKeague was himself a pretty high profile missing persons case which may not be a good example of a standard missing person case.

As well as the nature of the way she went missing / was stolen, I would wager it's in part because she was privileged, white and a cute little girl. If she was black and from a council estate in Peckham it would've been page 4 news.
