BRITAIN’S BIG SQUEEZE

In Britain, Austerity Is Changing Everything
After eight years of budget cutting, Britain is looking less like the rest of Europe and more like the United States, with a shrinking welfare state and spreading poverty.

And people wonder why Corbyn is popular.

Selling off libraries and parks to developers is awful.

Deeply depressing. Our base is well below the rest of Western Europe now.

As the Knowsley Council leader points out:
“No one should be doing this,” he says. “Not in the fifth-wealthiest country in the whole world. Sacking people, making people redundant, reducing our services for the vulnerable in our society. It’s the worst job in the world.”

Terrifying, but sadly, not surprising. Ever since Th*tcher all Britain's done is steadily become a little American acolyte. Going to get worse after Brexit. Teresa May secretly wants to phone the POTUS up and ask to be officially annexed as the 51st state...

In the good old days of this forum I'm sure a certain poster would be along any moment now to tell us about how there's isn't a magic money tree, and then finish up with some rant about Corbyn.

Harping back to Thatcher right now is akin to harping back to the second world war at the time she came to power.

Depends what kind of point you're trying to make really. If you're seeking to trace out historical roots of mass privatisation of services, massive difficulties in sourcing affordable housing, utter lack of empathy for the poor. sick and disabled or cuts to public services that's a good place to start. Obviously, some of that's been part of conservative thinking for a lot longer than that, but that's where a lot of that think went really 'mainstream'.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I don't understand what point you're trying to make..? I think another poster said it, but to reiterate: we live under Ayn Rand inspired, free market, dog-eat-dog, laissez-faire Capitalism, germinated in the good ol' U S of A and espoused by Ronald Reagan, imposed upon us by Margaret Thatcher. It's thanks to her, and this pernicious philosophy of Neo-Liberalism, that Britain is in the predicament it's in today...

Well yes and don't forget those luvable Bankers lending borrowed money then selling the loans. Of course they were bailed out unlike the poor and disabled who've had to pay for their mistakes. I think we have to give it 8 more years and once the poor die off we'll be fine.

But strangely enough there is a magic money tree for quantitative easing and to justify keeping taxes down.

Problem is that we've got people who cling to this sort of outdated 80s ideology like religious freaks cling to their belief in a superior being.

Hell, their whole philosophy is a magic money tree.

Arf.... The problem with Thatcher's revolution is eventually you run out of other people's stuff to sell. And it's all been sold to other countries.

The fact is that policitians in the UK want to move closer to the American model and away from Europe.
There is little resistance from the people because most don't see it happening. From a media point of view we are much closer to the USA than we are to Europe. We have America on our TV news at every bulletin whereas we only hear about Europes / Scandinavia when something special happens.
American TV is in our face all the while, people are becoming used to seeing ghetto's and violence.
With the likes of Fox/Redwood/ et al we are likely to move closer still until the American way of life (already too close) becomes the norm.

Or perhaps the bailout should have come at a cost to the institution.

The Labour suggestion was that the bank became nationalised I believe. Another option might have been that the banks paid back the money over time.

Certainly the double whammy with the banker's bonuses sticks in the throat.
