How do you begin to reason with people prepared to let the country burn and the union disintegrate to bring about something that I've struggled to see anyone articulate the tangible benefits of?

It's thoroughly depressing. Brexit is more important than peace on the island of Ireland but not as important as keeping Labour out of power.

Jeremy Corbyn would destroy this country.

Also

I wouldn't mind destroying this country.

You've kind of got to wonder what Corbyn might actually do that is worse than destroying the economy and dismantling the union.

I also admire that they have no shame in preferring that the United Kingdom is destroyed than that the Conservative Party is destroyed. Party over country every single time.

It's utter madness; I can't think of any other way to describe what's going on with our 'politics'. Not so much the fighting between parties, as that's always been there. But this near-radicalisation of the support base to a point where people are willing of self-harm to win an argument. It's just nuts. I can't quite get my head around the stupidity of where we're currently at.

My uncle is a bastion of the local community and also a Tory member.
I haven't seen him for over 20 years.
This poll does not surprise me one bit.
His views on the "troubles" in NI were "let them all kill themselves".
He also thought all young people should do compulsory National Service and the death penalty should be brought back.
He said "we didn't fight 2 World wars to have the EU dictate to us."
I pointed out to him that he was 12 in WW2 so he definitely didn't fight in 2 world wars and his reply was "you're a commie".
Has he mellowed in his old age? Not a chance.

You should have pointed out that, thanks to 'Commies', we were able to participate in the defeat of Hitler.

Fortunately not.

The plight of the couple who arrived very late at La Rochelle for their flight to Dublin was a pleasant distraction at the end of the holiday, particularly when the chap managed to lose his passport between passport control and the boarding gate (about twenty yards).

Next stop Portugal in September.

It's insane. I've also asked some of our more rabid leavers numerous times (a) what they think leaving looks like in practice and (b) what they see as being the tangible benefits that outweigh the costs. I've not had a genuine, sensible answer. People are prepared to make ridiculous sacrifices for something they can't define or explain the benefits of. Utter, utter madness.

You've put your finger on it: This is radicalisation. And it's all coming from mainstream politicians and media.

Indeed. I'd be interested to see these results plotted against readership of the Mail and the Express.

We were with some friends when one of them said, hang on, I'll just pop in and get a newspaper.

He came back out with the mail. I don't think he appreciated my observation that 'they hadn't got any newspapers then'.

He believes The Country Is Too Full. However, he will, I'm sure, be delighted when he becomes a grandfather.

That's what I really don't get.

The biggest criticism generally laid at Corbyn has been that he would do significant damage to the economy which they don't want.

But they are happy to do that same damage to the economy for Brexit?

Should open voting up to 16 year olds now people are living much longer. Balance things out a little.

I say, open it up to anyone over sixteen who can pass some basic literacy, reading comprehension and numeracy tests every 10 ten years or so.

But they didn't say BREXIT is more important than peace on the island of Ireland. They said they would accept a united Ireland if that was the price to pay for BREXIT. What is surprising is that more would be willing to lose Scotland than Northern Ireland. It shows how annoying the constant bleating of Nicola Sturgeon and her gang has been.

But there's significant damage and there's total destruction from which we might never recover. For almost any Tory a Corbyn government would almost certainly lead to the latter.

And you think that Northern Ireland becoming a part of Ireland would happen peacefully? You're being deliberately naive or disingenuous.

Let's not forget so many leading tories in 1940 would have been happy to agree peace with Hitler.

The leading one, of course, being Lord Halifax, whose throat Michael Foot* said he would happily have slit had the Germans arrived.

*Michael Foot, like so many 'commies', was a member of the 'stay behind' resistance who would have gone off-grid in the event of occupation to perform acts of near-suicidal resistance.

I'm not sure if you personally feel that way but I don't see how the country would literally never recover from whatever he could do.

If he was that bad he would be out in four years.

Logically it makes no sense to think that way.

And don't forget how many socialists were members of The Peace Pledge Union in the 1930's, attacking Churchill as a warmonger when he was warning of the Nazi threat.
Nor how many on the left opposed the war effort before June, 1945 because Stalin was in a pact with Hitler.
