The Republicans control the Senate; they'll block the impeachment.

They've just started the debate on whether to charge him with two 'articles of impeachment' - abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. So essentially, the House of Representatives will talk it over for 6 hours or so then vote on whether to level those charges against him. If they vote yes, then Trump will basically get a very stern telling off but nothing will happen. They can, however, proceed to a vote to remove him from office but given that 2/3rds of the senate (which is Republican-controlled) have to vote yes at that point it's extremely unlikely. In short, nothing will really happen but a lot of people will convince themselves this is some great moment of historical and political significance.

Looks that way doesn't it. All it will tell us is that he's a very naughty boy, but we know that already.

Trump on 10:55 - Dec 19 with 2534 views | flimflam | He will be the first president to be impeached and win another term in office. It wont get through the senate as they do not have the numbers. All a bit pointless really.

As others have said, this pretty much plays right into his hands and guarantees a second term. He won't like it....and hopefully it will cause him to self-combust....but in practical terms it just looks like 'the crooked system'....'the swamp'.... trying to get rid of a President that has done well for the man on the street.

Trump on 13:16 - Dec 19 with 2314 views | matteoblue | This seems to be a very foolish and unhelpful turn of events for the USA. The voting record shows that this is a completely political decision and that there is big division between the two parties, which has undoubtedly been caused by the election of Trump as president. There appears to be little chance of removing the president from office, and the likely outcome will be more division and infighting afterwards. What's amazing is that the Democrats still don't seem to have realised that this will only increase the popularity of Trump, which has happened steadily during his presidency as a result of repeated failed attempts of the Democrats to prosecute him on technicalities and to face the fact that they lost an election. It's all too reminiscent of the Remain campaign in Britain that has gone against a popular vote and ended up giving a large majority to the Brexiteers. When will they learn? He'll play the victim and use it to reinforce support within his cult, for sure. Don't think there's an awful lot we can do about it though.

Let us make this clear... TRUMP HAS BEEN IMPEACHED. Impeachment is the equivalent of indictment. He has been impeached (indicted) and will now face trial. The trial will be before the Senate.

And will fail as the numbers in the senate favour Trump. All pointless and will further increase his support. [Post edited 19 Dec 2019 15:18]

Yes he has been impeached - so at least he has achieved one thing that Obama never managed ! However he will not be removed - the Senate (which is majority Republican) must vote 2/3rds which will not happen Right now though Pelosi is refusing to send through the documentation to begin proceedings until a trial with witnesses is confirmed - so this could drag out for a while (Dems could keep it that way until the next election)
