I’m not one to whinge about ITFC but... 22:18 - Jan 28 with 4079 viewsmonytowbray

...for some reason tonight hit me harder than I like to acknowledge as to how low we’ve sunk. Deep down I’m sure we’ll be going up this year but deeper down is my worst fear of getting trapped in the 3rd tier before it truly does become our new level.

Sometimes I don’t know whether to laugh or cry supporting Ipswich. Tonight we could have started the first of two games with a win to get a nice gap and some momentum into an automatic promotion campaign. Instead in true Ipswich BANTER ERA fashion we roll the dice and get snake eyes. Meanwhile those w@nkers down the road get close to the edge of a downhill spiral, gamble and roll a double 6 to free parking.

I think the smile I’ve had in the last 3 days in regards to football being slapped off my face means I’m being a bit dramatic. But eurgh. Football depression. It’s the hope that kills you. Etc.

We looked more of a 2nd division side tonight, while Rotherham looked Championship standard. This isn't the first time we've been made to look poor by the better sides in the league.

Poll: If KM goes now, will you applaud him when he returns with his new club?

Rotherham definitely weren't Championship standard. Way better than us but they'd get destroyed in the Championship, which also highlights how worryingly far off we are.

Agreed.

And we've also been beaten by worse Rotherham sides in the Championship itself.

The side doesn’t give you anything to hang your hat on.

They continually let you done in big moments and games there’s no winners mentality at the club.

We just aren’t good enough at the moment the last few games have been promising and the door opens up for us and we never walk through it. That’s a clear sign of a side that isn’t good enough to
Meet its targets.

I fear we are in this league for while, a long while as we don’t have anyone driving it from the top or who’s clever enough to put the right people in place from a football side of things. We don’t have much money, ok that’s fine but try and be clever with what you do have get the right infrastructure in place. Brentford are a club that we could learn from, there’s clubs that are smaller than us that are pissing all over us as a club and have been for years now.
We have no Devine right to be a championship club, and we deserve to be where we are though bad decisions over a long period of time .

Shows how depressed I got - I seriously wished that we had gone bust over the summer instead of Bury.

I realise how unreasonable, unfair and extremely over-the-top that is, and I'm gradually coming out of it, but I'm sick and tired of everything to do with football as well as this club at the moment.

I'm happy we're not them, to be honest. Based on tonight I'd still say we stand a better chance next year if we do both go up.

I feel the same. I thought we would do well to finish mid table before the season started but started so well that I thought we’d get stronger and dominate. Sadly, it’s others that have got stronger while we have been found out.

We are just not good enough to beat the better sides and its good fortune from the early part of the season which sees us where we are and not mid table. Portsmouth and Sunderland are getting stronger and will challenge along with those that are there already. My fear is that we will finish 8th 9th territory and our one chance to get out of this league at the right end will be gone.

A long passed history means nothing. Neither does good support for this level (this year). We belong in this league and given the never ending decline of the football club, maybe we should be grateful to be here. We certainly do not belong any higher.

It probably is to be honest! I just hated watching them tonight. I hated watching us too, but I know we have so much more to us than what we saw tonight. I really didn't get what we were trying to do. Lambert saying the long ball wasn't tactical has confused me further.

The core of the squad is still that which got so pitifully relegated. I'd be less optimistic, right now.

Incredible assessment of a team that finished above us last season, has accumulated more points this season, and schooled us both times we played them this season

Not really. I think he has a point. Our brand of football would fair better in the more footballing culture of the Championship than the physical approach Rotherham display. Our style of football and the physique of our players just isn’t suited to the pub approach displayed by a lot of sides in League One. Tbh we are doing well all things considered, and it’s little wonder some Clubs have taken a while to get out of this division . It’s not for the feint hearted is it.

There's something there on our good days. Just a lack of consistency. I don't remember ever in my y00f (mid 90s to early 00s) supporting a Town side that continually adjusted to match the opposition rather than playing to our strengths and making other teams find a way to deal with us. On paper it shouldn't work that way, no one ever won anything being the jack of all trades and the master of none. Sometimes I wonder based on the glimmers of hope we do see a better manager with a proven style of play could get us consistent, but then again that was the plan for Hurst and we all know how that went (although you could argue Hurst took his style of play and overestimated it far too much for the 2nd tier by overhauling the team when really it just needed tweaking alongside some confidence to win rather than Mick's approach of graft alone being enough).

Last night though, god knows what we were trying to do. We looked like Rotherham had us sussed by keeping the game fast and giving us no room to think about what to do next. Everyone looked disjointed, multiple players chasing the ball and the same man rather than sticking to a position on defending yet when we had the ball everyone was stagnant, thus resulting in a HOOF IT FORWARD approach that Jackson or Keane rarely got on the end of if the ball even managed to get past the Rotherham midfield. Will Keane had an utter shocker up front. The best we played were the final 8 minutes and by then it was far too late, Rotherham only had to knock it out of play to slow the game down and stop us in our tracks.

Hoping it's a one off as last night was EXTREMELY bad. I'm still annoyed today. It's one game I know after 3 wins in a row, but imagine if we'd kept our form from the first dozen games we'd have pretty much all but won the league by now.

Problem is Lambert takes too long to make changes during a match when it clearly isn’t going according to plan. Then he makes the wrong decision ! Ie Sears on when it should have been Bishop, and Norwood on for Keane, far , far earlier.

I'm no sports psychologist, but we still seem mentally fragile and poor at coping with adversity. If the game plan last night was to keep the ball on the floor and not let Rotherham drag us down to their level, we did a piss poor job of showing it. It's a worrying performance going into the next two games against promotion rivals. I don't believe in "must win" and all that nonsense, but it's an even bigger game at the weekend now in terms of our performance. Let's hope the experience of dragging ourselves back from our poor Nov/Dec run stands us in good stead.
