Kill your pets 17:48 - Feb 12 with 11971 views | Lord_Lucan | The New Scientist, in a recent editorial entitled "Cute, fluffy and horribly greedy", largely agreed with the book's findings that some pets, due to the food they eat, have a surprisingly high "ecological footprint" (a way of quantifying human demand on the planet's ecosystems using a measure called "global hectares"). "According to the authors . . . it takes 0.84 hectares [2.07 acres] of land to keep a medium-sized dog fed. In contrast, running a 4.6-litre Toyota Land Cruiser, including the energy required to construct the thing and drive it 10,000km a year, requires 0.41 hectares. Dogs are not the only environmental sinners. The eco-footprint of a cat equates to that of a Volkswagen Golf. If that's troubling, there is an even more shocking comparison. In 2004, the average citizen of Vietnam had an ecological footprint of 0.76 hectares. For an Ethiopian, it was just 0.67 hectares. In a world where scarce resources are already hogged by the rich, can we really justify keeping pets that take more than some people?" https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20427313-200-cute-fluffy-and-horribly-gre

I saw something a few days ago about a family who have 22[?] children. I don't get it. And I know people can't be dictated to about having the families they want, but at the same time isn't there some responsibility to not reproduce on a larger scale than necessary too?

Yeah, saw that. On one hand you can still understand that stuff happening in the developing world, or in certain cultures/countries for varying reasons, but in the UK? My grandad was one of thirteen. Unusually for that time, only one of them passed away. Family reunions are a nightmare.

Times were different then though, and more understandable. But with modern medicine and contraception and the knowledge the world is becoming ridiculously over-populated... Maybe I'm wrong but I consider it selfish.

Fatties yes Fat gits are far worse they take up more room in football grounds overspilling onto other fans seats cost more in fuel when on a train, bus or flying yet expect to pay the same go a couple of pounds extra in your luggage and RyanAir will come down on you like a ton of bricks - yet weigh a ton of bricks and nothing is said feeding them would keep a small tribe in papa new guinea feed if you want to be fat then ok, but start to pay your share of what it costs thhat's my thought and the thought of the LaF (The Legua against Fatties) of which I am a member

Why can't we? I don't believe it's a human right to have 22 kids. We don't need anything as draconian as the one child policy but not sure why we need to allow people to completely take the piss.

It's not enforceable is it. But no, I don't know why there can't be encouragement for families to stop at one or two. The world population has doubled, doubled in 50 years. That's insane.

Hmm. I do have a policy to go alongside my flagship 'ban pensioners from supermarkets evenings and weekends' policy but but sure how well it would go down on here.

While you're at it, can you ban mothers with children from, well anywhere, during the school holidays? They should all be in big sheds unless at school.

Well that wasn't my point really. I'm more concerned that there's a lot of people out there trying their best to do the right thing for the greater good (for the greater good) and it's being so readily undone by others who think their irresponsibility is something to be celebrated.
