The US and UK seem to be taking a much less draconian stance on Covid 19 16:23 - Mar 11 with 11365 views | StokieBlue | Greece closed all their schools with only 89 cases. Poland did the same with about 40 cases and now Ukraine has done the same with 1 case. "Another European country is taking drastic measures to curb the spread of coronavirus. Despite only having one confirmed case to date, Ukraine has said it is closing all educational institutions (which also includes nurseries and universities) from tomorrow until 3 April, the Kyiv Post reports. It also says that gatherings of more than 200 people will be banned. The country has only tested 43 people, 41 of whom have tested negative, with one still being examined." Do people think we are being too cautious with making big decisions or is the alleged "data-driven" decisions made by the government more sensible? Closing the schools after 1 case seems very draconian but it might prevent a much bigger outbreak. SB

The US and UK seem to be taking a much less draconian stance on Covid 19 on 22:22 - Mar 11 by StokieBlue | I think a lot or people would see that as a very callous way of looking at things. There is certainly some truth in the statement but it's never nice to literally put economic wealth against peoples lives. SB |
As suggested earlier, a fall in GDP ultimately results in people losing their lives, as the years of austerity did, as the virus will. Tanking the economy by 10 GDP points vs lives lost to virus based on the point of given interventions. There will be a theoretical formula.

They go hand in hand. I refer you to my earlier post Stokie. There isn't an answer.

...and general UK response. Convinced that there will a number of Corona positive Madrid fans who will now be drinking and staying in hotels in Liverpool. How can you allow the game ahead when games in Madrid are banned. He felt in general we had wasted weeks with 'academic' behavioural views of the problem, whereas we need put in much sharper measures, testing all those coming in from areas with Coronavirus, building capacity for care. WHO pandemic statement is the 'kick up the arse' for the likes UK and US.

The US and UK seem to be taking a much less draconian stance on Covid 19 on 23:23 - Mar 11 with 673 views | pointofblue | It feels like the Government is acting off the back of advise from the Medical Officers; one thing they had made clear is they didn't feel banning people from outdoor events would have a huge effect. However, the situation in Liverpool with the Madrid fans and reports of people returning from Italy whilst showing symptoms and not being scanned is ridiculous. It's as though they want the virus to spread.

Are they though? Some medical people have been coming out and saying that the government aren't doing enough. Meanwhile, the Govt appear to be basing their views on this sort of suff, which sounds all very much like the Tufton Street 'think tanks' approach: I'd trust WHO and people associated with them far more than anyone linked to No. 10.

I can see the logic though, only from face-to-face experience where I know people who are becoming frustrated and tired with the constant reporting and wondering if it's being blown out of proportion. Saying that, I highly doubt the Nudge Unit said not to scan people flying on from Italy whilst showing symptoms.
