Keir Starmer shadow cabinet 19:48 - Mar 29 with 9646 views | tractordownsouth | A few leaks today have suggested that Rachel Reeves will become new shadow chancellor, when Keir inevtiably wins. Not too keen on that myself. Which names do my fellow paid up leftie tree huggers or people who'd be open to voting labour want to see in prominent jobs? A few I'd put out there are: Dan Jarvis, Yvette Cooper, Stephen Kinnock, Lisa Nandy, Ian Murray, Roseena Allin Khan and Chris Bryant. Would quite like Ed Miliband back in some capacity too as he clearly has some good knowledge, if not the leadership qualities. Of the current lot, I wouldn't mind having RLB as environment sec. due to her green industrial revolution policy, as Keir has said both her and Nandy will be given roles. Barry Gardiner and Jonathan Ashworth seem fairly sensible and Angela Rayner will rightly be in there when she inevitably becomes deputy leader. I think it's important to keep a few of them around to maintain unity, but there does need to be a big clearout.

Simple answer should have been Yes, continue the transition period for a minimum of 12 months - anyone suggesting ending the transition period on 31st Dec would have completely lost any sense of reality in my opinion...

If Alexander Boris De Pfeffle Johnson connected to the public, Keir Starmer, son of a nurse and toolmaker, can do the same. Funny how those who hate 'identity politics' are falling over themselves to criticise Labour for appointing a white middle-class man

Properly pleased with this. My only gripe so far is Rachel Reeves but it's a minor role. |
I am no fan of Angela Raynor. She seems to be one of those urban centric labour types who has no understanding of the problems of rural areas.

Problem is in most rural areas you could stick a blue rosette on a pile of dung and people would vote for it. Most Labour MPs are representing more urban areas so that naturally tends to be their focus. If we had PR maybe that would change somewhat.

The core problems (low pay, public service underinvestment) are the same everywhere though. Keir will need to open up and connect more to to rural areas and towns but as Herb said, the vast majority of rural constituencies will never vote Labour.

And rural constituencies suffer for it. Tory governments don't work hard to get their votes because they don't need to, and labour governments don't because they don't have a chance. If I was a campaigning man, in the absence of PR, I would try to persuade people to vote whichever way would make their constituency more marginal. Regardless of who they supported.

I believe Skipton & Ripon got about 10-12,000 votes for the Lab candidate in 12/19 (iirc) - many of them probably protest votes, but it suggests a possible glimmer of hope (albeit not while Julian Smith is the Con there, with his maj of about 19K).

It looks a lot more grown up than under Corbyn. The only Corbynite left is RLB and I'm not sure even she knew whether she was a true believer or not. Glad to see Shami out. He credibility has fallen massively. [Post edited 6 Apr 2020 14:44]

But not that different from Corbyn's shadow cabinets either. Labour opposition needs to come across the spectrum and isn't the domain of the left or right of the party. People bang on about Momentum but the real factionalism was driven by Labour First and Progress who tried to torpedo a broad church from the beginning. They just wanted Corbyn out.

No Dawn Butler, Richard Burgon, Shami Charabarti, Barry Gardiner, Ian Lavery , Jon Trickit, John McDonell. All Corbyn loyalists. And toxic Seamus Milne no longer running comms. [Post edited 6 Apr 2020 15:40]

Corbyn seemed to put a shadow cabinet together that did not dare challenge either him or McDonnell

Really happy with this, he's kept the competent Corbynites and given voices to those who didn't have one over the past 4 years. Shame there's no Dan Jarvis, Yvette Cooper or Chris Bryant but if you'd offered me this line up the day after the General Election, I'd have snapped you hand off for it.

Smith is one of the few decent ones left in the PCP. Just looked at his constituency though, it'd take a 20% swing to beat him next time, which is virtually impossible.

How do you work that out? Take a look at his first shadow cabinets. He was only going for supposed Corbynites when the others had resigned.
