Cyclists please read and advise. 11:33 - Apr 15 with 3983 views | hampstead_blue | I'm looking at a hybrid/gravel/cyclo-cross bike. Loads of tracks round here and an amazing forest. No need for wet weather mud plugger, am not into that. Want something that will take a gently rugged trail and still be fairly quick on the road. Am liking this; https://www.discountcyclesdirect.co.uk/catalog/product.php?CI_ID=35837&Item=%27M but also this; https://whyte.bike/products/ridgeway https://www.merlincycles.com/merlin-malt-g1-tiagra-gravel-bike-2020-147541.html https://www.tweekscycles.com/uk/genesis-cda-10-gravel-bike-2020-2011090/ Would prefer to get last years bike at a discount but don't want to spend more than £700 - well, Mrs H won't allow it! Objective; Few long roides around bridle paths, forest tracks, shops. Nothing epically long, maybe two hours tops.

Cyclists please read and advise. on 11:55 - Apr 15 by giant_stow | Now that I'm an expert cyclist, I can help. Buy yourself something like this: https://imgur.com/nb1obpu This little beauty is state of the art hybrid thingy, cost fck all and goes like a train over anything. |
My bike is a hybrid, which was exactly what I wanted, rugged enough for the bridleways and tracks I like to go on but comfortable on the roads too. Cost me fifty quid second hand on facebook. I've spent more on replacing the tyres than the bike cost.

Can recommend Boardmans, I have a Boradman CX bike which I've use for CX racing - it's light, robust and very responsive!

Evans cycles have a clearance section where they sell of ex-display bikes at big discounts. https://www.evanscycles.com/clearance It is a lot of money but the more you spend now the less you will want to change if you do get into it. I am in my third year back on the bike and I can quite happily do a 50 miler on a Saturday morning. If you can go for hydraulic disks, they are worth the extra. |
you'll quickly find that bikes are like male jewellry..everythng changes every year for no good reason other than to make money off the gullible. A second hand bike might be a good starting point......but the key thing is to get one that's the right size. Are you sure you really want to travel over gravel paths? These can be very uncomfortable - and are very limiting and you will get punctures..... much better in many ways to stick to the country roads less travelled - which also seem to tbe the ones with pubs and ye olde tea shoppes along the way.

My thoughts are that you need to buy good engineering now or pay later. Sadly Mrs H has heard it a lot which is why I've a room full of hand made guitars etc and loads of cricket bats! I'm hoping she will warm to the idea over the coming days. Let's see how much I can upsell on this one.....

Yep, middle class. :-) I would be tempted to get a normal hardtail mountain bike. If you enjoy riding trails, and you start enjoying cycling off-road a lot, you will want a proper mountain bike. I have some woods and trails near me, the fun stuff would not be suitable for a hybrid. If you are not going to do serious and/or a lot of stuff on the roads, think of the road part of a ride as fitness training. Yes, you will go a bit slower on a MB on the road as opposed to a hybrid, but so what? I will cycle to the woods on a hardtail, no real issue.

Your improved aerobic fitness will come with lots of benefits for her. And the more you spend, the more you'll feel obliged to get out there and use it.

They make exceptional bikes but they are no longer the amazing value they once were now they are established as an excellent bike maker.

I shall use that as part of my argument. Canyon have just sent an email offering 10% off the range. Might give them a call and see if I can get a bit more....I'll be buying two!

Ended-up with this; https://www.discountcyclesdirect.co.uk/catalog/product.php?CI_ID=35837&Item=%27M Is is a cyclo-cross bike but is perfect for my needs. Mrs H has a nice new Marin as well. Thanks again. Very helpful.

I have a Merida. It is a Crossway. Not the lightest, not the prettiest, but is rock solid and perfect for cruising down the country lanes and bumping along bridlepaths and tracks. Fifty quid second hand, bargain.
