World XI 08:15 - Apr 16 with 2815 viewsitfcjoe

Been doing the rounds on Twitter, a challenge to name the best XI with the following criteria:

- No two players from the same country
- No two can have played for the same club
- All eleven have to have played in your lifetime

I think the last point makes it easier for the older posters on here, but it is bloody hard to get an eligible team together.

My team is:

Jan Oblak (Slovenia)

Phillip Lahm (Germany)
Vincent Kompany (Belgium)
Sergio Ramos (Spain)
Paolo Maldini (Italy)

Roy Keane (Ireland)
Pavel Nedved (Czech Republic)
Gilberto Silva (Brazil)

Lionel Messi (Argentina)
Kylian Mpabbe (France)
Alan Shearer (Englan)

Yes, had a little think about that and it's very tough. Even with players that are predominantly one-club players like Lahm, Messi, Ramos and Maldini.

If you want to take it to a black-belt ninja level you could do one that includes Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It's the club rule that's the killer, I started with your team and tried to change it - I mean if you say wanted to put Zlatan in he then wipes out anyone who's ever played for Ajax, Juve, Inter, Barca, AC, PSG & Man Utd!
I might come back and make more changes after more thought.....

Allison (Brazil)

Phillip Lahm (Germany)
Diego Godin (Uruguay)
Sergio Ramos (Spain)
Paolo Maldini (Italy)

Roy Keane (Ireland)
Pavel Nedved (Czech Republic)
Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium)

Lionel Messi (Argentina)
Kylian Mpabbe (France)
Alan Shearer (England)

There are a few killer spells in there like De Bruyne at Chelsea!

Every Dutch player it seems has played for AC Milan or Barcelona, and amazing how many players have had a spell at AC more generally. And one mistake means you almost have to start again (and is why after about 10 attempts I've ended up with Gilberto in there as just gave up!)

Craig Forrest went on loan to Chelsea so him and Drogba fail

And Dunga isn't a CB.....!

I didn't even bother looking up Forrest but thought it would be funny if that team failed because of him.

I was going to caveat that dunga was playing cb but didn't bother and put kompany as back up instead. I could just play 343

I will find a random keeper. Can I have chilavert or higuita or cordoba?

Oh great, I thought the club restriction was at the same time rather than the same club at all, back to the drawing board on mine then!

Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

Glad to see some appreciation for Oblak. He really is a brilliant keeper.

Lambert wouldn’t be able to get that team out of Division 3.

With or without Forrest. He would probably pick ALB.....

.....and then play him on the wing.

What makes it easier for us old people is that we have more to choose from but what makes it difficult is that we have more to choose from. I mean, Beckenbauer or Pele (both played for NY Cosmos annoyingly)? Moore or Best (Fulham)? Oh and do I put John Charles up front or in defence?

Anyway, lined up in the formation used when I first played the game (though to be fair I expect this lot to be able to play in any formation):

Yashin
Maldini Zanetti
Vogts Zidane Moore
Johnstone Cruyff Charles Pele Dzajic

Can't get John Charles and Zidane in there as both Juve players.....

Arrrrrrgh!

Oh well, sorry Zizou but out you go and risking no more than one Lyon player:

Yashin

Maldini Zanetti

Vogts Coluna Moore

Johnstone Cruyff Charles Pele Dzajic

But then again maybe risk that nobody else on the list played for as many North American teams as Mr da Silva Ferreira:

Yashin

Maldini Zanetti

Vogts Zidane Moore

Johnstone Cruyff Eusebio Pele Dzajic

Cresswell though? He’s not even an England player. This task is for a World Class XI, Cressy doesn’t fit I don’t think.

Left back and centre mid were my last positions to fill, hence Cresswell and Speed getting chucked in. Put in Cressy to have an Ipswich link. I’ll have another think and see if I can find someone better

Edit:
Ghoulam (Algeria) In for Cresswell and
Cazorla (Spain) in for Speed.

Still probably room for improvement in mine but frankly, I’m not arsed anymore!

Ha! I know! I've had 10-12 mates all give it the thumbs up!

Some eagle eye pointed it out this morning.
