Novak Djokovic against mandatory vaccination 17:04 - Apr 20 with 6827 viewsHarry_Palmer

Novak Djokovic has revealed he is against mandatory vaccination and it could put his tennis career in jeopardy if he is prevented from travelling due to not agreeing to take a future Covid-19 vaccine.

It's a shame the press have to leap in with the immature 'anti-vaxxer' remarks instead of engaging in sensible debate, after all this raises an important debate around civil liberties. If the likes of Bill Gates get their way, nobody will be able to work, travel or do pretty much anything else unless they are up to date with all vaccines and eventually have a microchip or some kind of biometric id to prove it.

To my mind maintaining sovereignty of your own body and what goes into it is a fundamental human right, as are the right to work and travel. If we allow the state to mandate medical interventions in order for us to be active in society then we are going down a potentially very dark road in my view.

I am all for making a vaccine available asap for people who feel they need it but I would strongly oppose it being mandatory, after all if the vaccine works then why should anybody who takes it need to fear somebody that doesn't?

I realise Covid-19 has changed the the landscape considerably but I hope most would agree with maintaining the basic right to medical choice and health freedom. What do the good people of TWTD think?

No, I doubt many people think that. There are however documented cases ( albeit rare ) where people have suffered serious adverse reactions or even died as a result of a vaccine reaction.

Based on this I would suggest it is not unreasonable for people to demand the right to choice.

The risks of adverse reactions in vaccines are considerably lower(by a factor of several million) than the risks that come with actually contracting covid-19 though

Of course he has the right....but it's a two way street. Countries are well within their rights to refuse him entry based in his decisions.

That's freedom of choice for you. It doesn't mean 'freedom from consequence'.

Up to this point in time everybody has had the right to work and travel while potentially being able to infect somebody else with a cold/flu etc. where do you draw the line?

I get into my car everyday and there is the risk that somebody else's reckless driving could cause me serious harm or death, that is a calculated risk we all take everyday. Would you be in favour of the State removing the right for an individual to drive their own car if we had driverless cars which guaranteed no RTA's?

I am not against a C19 vaccination per se. As I said I am all for it being made available asap to those who feel they need it. I have some reservations though about the timescale they are working to in developing this particular vaccine and the safety steps which are being skipped. (This has been acknowledged by Gates and others ). There are also other pro-vaccine scientists such as Paul Offit and Peter Hotez who have voiced their concerns over rushing to get this vaccine over the line.

My main point is one of freedom of choice though. I accept the need for a C-19 vaccine, I just hope that those who don't wish to take it are not given the ultimatum of either taking it or suffering complete social exclusion.

It is the classic social and moral dilemma.

Anti vaxxers are loons and need to be treated with contempt.

However- the principle of bodily autonomy is a very important one. How far does that extend is problematic with a vaccine because you start to impact on everyone else and to endanger people who medically cannot have the vaccine.

The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to the presence of those who think they've found it. (Sir Terry Pratchett)

Because like everything else in life we do have the right to do as we please,

but not if it affects other people.

I really cannot see how this can be confusing for him.

Not a dig at you, cos as a rule I have liked many of your posts in the past, just not on this.

Fair enough. however what I would ask you to consider though is that this concept works both ways. If the vaccine is mandated for the entire population, history tells us there will be some casualties as a direct result of the vaccine itself, and with this one being produced to a much faster timescale maybe even more than usual. So a Government forcing everybody to take it 'for the greater good' will likely be causing harm to some along the way.

I should also repeat that if the vaccine works and everybody who wants it has access to it, then neither Novak Djokovic or anybody else should represent any sort of threat.

But you'll be cool with being refused travel and/or entry into various places, as happen in Australia presently with unvaccinated children?

i've already commented about travel. No i wouldn't bleat. I would accept that I may not be able to travel unless I did have a vaccination if available, but I'd have to give it serious thought and would at least leave it a year or two

I'm not sure you can really claim that to be the case for a vaccine that has not yet been produced although I take your general point.

It is my experience though that adverse reactions are both under-reported initially and very much under investigated when they are reported.

I'm not sure vaccines have caused casualties. They're very safe. Isn't the main issue (at least for some vaccines) for people with egg allergies?

Your anecdotal experience(as presumably as lay person) doesn't outweigh decades of controlled, properly conducted and reviewed studies though.

Genuinely interested to know what your experience is here.

Is personal or professional or both? As Badge has stated...empirical evidence based on substantial data sets and timelines show adverse reactions to vaccines as being incredibly low as a percentage...generally for every 1 million vaccines given 1 or 2 have an adverse reaction.

It'd have to be pretty rife in his 'experience' for it to be even minutely more common than the actual, facts show, statistically.

In the current climate, if and when a vaccine becomes available, I wouldn't be at al surprised to find the unvaccinated treated as complete pariahs.

Possible implications not only for travel, but employment, financial issues (esp all types of insurance) and no doubt many other things.

From WHO:

Fact 1: Polio continues to paralyse children
While polio is a distant memory in most of the world, the disease still exists in some places and mainly affects children under 5. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis (usually in the legs). Among those paralysed, 5% to 10% die when their breathing muscles become immobilized.

Britain's greatest ever philanthropist paid for over 5,000 iron lungs to help those whose lungs were paralysed by polio.

I don't recall branson or dyson committing huge sums of their own money to the current medical emergency - or any other medical emergency for that matter.

Anaphylaxis secondary to previously unknown severe egg allergy is the primary cause of death. And occurances of that are generally 1 in several million, if not billions.
