Milk crates 16:17 - May 19 with 5158 viewstonydinning

Did children really used to take milk crates to matches to stand on or is this a bit of tongue in cheek rose tinted spectacles?

It's always amused me when people bring it up in memories of yesteryear.

I once tried explaining the concept to a work colleague and they were totally baffled.

Milkmen have seen a bit of a resurgence in some areas recently too. Although mainly the memory of them probably divides the 70s and early 80s kids from those who came later.

I stood on a foot stool at the front of the West Stand, not sure if I was still using it in 1961/62 but I probably was.

My sister, who is seven years younger than me,stood on the stool when she started going.

I used to get a crate from the car park of the railway station where they had an area full of junk.
I'd pick it up on the way to the ground and put it back after.
Parked on Belstead Road.

Same here but they only deliver 3 days a week, think it is a franchise operation.

Yes, I think they're franchised out. We get 3 a week too - Mon/Wed/Fri.

Yes always took one as a kid, you werent going to see anything otherwise, I was as tall with arms up as the wall in Churchmans so couldn't even see the pitch if I was at the front,or pull myself up to sit on the top, the crate was near as much as big as me, but we always used to stand back up that stand and always with the metal bar behind you so you didnt get swept up in the surges, even then once or twice youd get caught and find yourself flying forwards down a gap as your feet werent anywhere near touching the ground

Had a foot stool that my dad painted blue and white. Stood on it in Churchmnas, happy days.

A grocery van doing the rounds door to door in this lockdown climate would surely make a killing. Recall the Co-Op used to run them when I was a kid.

I had a wooden fold up stool to stand in the old North. Wood was 2 inches thick. You could have absolutely skulled someone with it.

Yep. When I was five or six my dad made a wooden box for me to stand on.

I remember when I was seven or eight my dad would be at the back of the stand and he’d ask the bloke in Front to “pass the boy down” which everybody did until I was at the wall right at the front.

Wouldn’t see the old man for the entire 90 minutes.

Oh and it’s also true that people used to piss down the back of your leg during the game. That happened twice from recollection.

I'm assuming that was twice at Ipswich? If you watched football in Scotland, I would say that would happen at every game. The piss was several inches deep at the front of the stand when I have been at Parkhead.

I certainly did. Stood right against the wall in the north stand. Used to have to get to the ground at about 1.30 if you wanted a decent spot against the wall. We did graduate to a stool thing after a while.

I had a blue one. It was taller than it was wide. Got knocked off it once when a Chelsea fan was being thrown out from the back of the Churchmans back in about 84.

Two milk crates and a modified kitchen stool for my three. The lads around us were fantastic in helping to look after them. I loved standing terraces. Footy ain't the same sitting down.

Yep, I was at the back of Churchmans with my trusty milk crate every home game banging like my life depended on it on the corrugated iron.

I’ve got a terrible memory but I can still recall standing on an orange milk crate on the right hand side of churchmans watching Cooper save a penalty against Wolves in the first game I ever went to. Hope that one lasts.

I had a red Coke crate that i took to every game. Started off in the West Stand and soon graduated to the North. All the kids down the front, dads further back. TWTD

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I still have my, very small, home made box! Dunno why, its only about a foot square, but holds happy memories of mid 70's.

Did see a couple used in anger, in Churchmans, against Arsenal in 83'. Id had enough after pre match shinnanigans by Willis Faber building, North was queing up the road, so me a my mate thought we'd just go in Churchmans. Half time, a bunch of Gooners came up the middle stairwell, a spot where the mid 20 year old Kinfisher blokes were gathered with their kids. Bad move for the Gooners...
