We're not that far off 12:20 - Jun 15 with 15812 viewsgoperryrevs

After the Cov away game, I chatted to some Cov fans who said that, first half especially, we were the best team by far they'd seen all season. Early in the season, Cov's defence was woeful at times. But they managed to plug that gap, turn it around and now they're up.

Especially in league 1, margins are small - which is why we went from winning every week to losing every week. We've got a good crop of youngsters coming through, and players returning from injury, and a manager who, despite his failings at times, should be good enough for league 1. We'll have also had the experience playing for a season in league 1 to draw on.

Even if we lose Flynniesta and Wolf, there's enough to be hopeful that if/when next season happens, there's no reason we shouldn't be able to have a good go of it.

You seem to plan on us never conceding a goal? The stats I put up show that we only conceded 6 goals in 17 games and only won 5 of them because we scored a mere 5 goals. That tells the tale of how impotent we were in attack.

Don’t be silly, if we didn’t concede any goals we’d have won all those games we didn’t score in, you're such an idiot etc etc

I completely understand the point being made that our attack was toothless Tractorboy, but when we have lost 12 leagues games, which is a third of the matches we've played, that also indicates we weren't that hard to beat either. The good sides in most leagues have both ends of the pitch functioning well.

We weren't that hard to beat as teams would often only have to score once and the job was done as we wouldn't be able to create anything of note to score a goal or two back.

In 8 of the games we lost we didn’t score a goal - that’s why we were easy to beat

Again, amazing that anyone can look at that and think the defence was the problem

Reread what I've actually posted, instead of making things up to suit your own agenda. So that could be an additional 8 points we could've picked up if we'd kept clean sheets in those games? Unrealistic, but even it was 4 points, that also reduces the deficit on those above us who'd got a march on us by beating us 1-0 especially towards the end of the season.

Your expectations are entirely unrealistic - only Peterborough, Oxford and Coventry kept more clean sheets than us as it is. Rotherham who were promoted kept 3 less but scored 15 more goals than us

You’re blaming the defence for us being beaten in games where it has largely done its job and the attack demonstrably hasn’t as we haven’t scored a goal

Yeah but if the defence was even better those 1-0 defeats would have been 0-0 draws. Or something.

Based on clean sheets % for games played we actually lie 7th, just ahead of Shrewsbury Town. Like I have said, I acknowledge that the final third needs improving I’ve agreed with that point throughout, but I still stand that our defence is far from perfect, can be improved and help us even more in games, especially the tight ones.

Of course it can be improved but continuing to focus on it is bizarre when the major issue is overwhelmingly at the other end of the pitch

Whilst we sit 4th/7th in clean sheets, we have failed to score in 13 games - only Bolton, Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury have failed to score in more (and Tranmere if basing on average)

It's bizarre isn't it? You won't get anywhere with him though, he's been through this process with several posters making the same arguments and he's not budged an inch. It's an almost admirable level of pig-headedness.

That’s fine, I’ll remind you of my point when we get promoted and I’m sure you’ll do the same with yours, even though I agree with it. Certainly not mental though.

A big part of the problem last season was after KVY got injured we relied on a winger at right back, or Donacien who was largely crap. Wilson was a solid enough 'blocker' in an back 3, but little more than that, and absolutely dreadful in possession. Properly dreadful. I don't buy into a lot of the criticism of Chambers, he's better on the ball than a lot on here make out and perfectly good enough for this level. Woolfy impressed too. Kenlock fell out of favour and we never really had a proper left back thereafter. An absence of 2 defensively minded full backs left us with little option but to play a central 3 with wing backs after the horror show of a back 4 at Lincoln. We looked a little more solid, Peterborough aside, but it definitely stifled our creativity and width further forward.

Personally I would like to see a back 4 of KVY - Chambers - Woolfy - Kenlock. We only saw it twice last season and kept 2 clean sheets. It gives us the right sort of balance.

We seemed to have a lot of confusion at full-back/wing back and how to fit Judge into the team. Plus a strange desire to unsettle Holy in goal with someone who wasn't demonstrably better.

But I could see where everyone else fitted in. There was just this seemingly unnecessary confusion over Judge in particular that had knock on effects in too many other areas. For example, Garbutt should have been our left midfielder given his ability in attacking areas but he was sacrificed in that position for Judge and then became an average defender.

There's so much to admire about Judge as a player but he's not the player to build a team around. He's a joker that could have a free role in an otherwise solid team.
