We retain an advantage for a year or two with the academy but given time, that too will fade.

I'm not sure we will.

I have been hearing for a long while that there were massive cuts planned for the Academy and that is why there has been an exodus of coaches from the club in recent months.

I cant say for sure this is correct but the people who told me are in a position to know!

I had in mind that we have a better quality of youngster than other teams in the division- and unless we dumpt them all over the summer, that should remain the case for a year or so...

I'm sorry everyone if this is a stupid question, but is the manager and his staff included, when totalling up salaries?

You can't have a manager on allegedly £500,000 a year, and all the playing staff combined being on £2.5 million.

Indeed!

Years of neglect are coming home to bite us on the backside and I think the damage done is irreversible now.

Sad times but hey, we must thank Marcus for "keeping us going".

No, but one good season can allow a team to have some degree of success.

This amount of consistent incompetence here does reflect structural failings over more than a decade, a trend bucked only by McCarthy.

Of course they should be based on income!

Why on earth should clubs attracting 18k a week be forced to pay the same amount as Accrington who get 2k fans? It makes no sense. As a commercial entity you might as well stick a fork in us.

Maybe with 18k crowds and a salary cap we'd manage to get our debts down?

And for those that way inclined, make the club more financially appealling to a new backer/owner.

It refers to player wages plus agents' fees, according to The Times. Worth noting that what's new today - or actually yesterday as that's when the EFL AGM was - is the size of the vote required to change the rules, not the figures. They were recommended last month by the EFL’s Financial Controls Working Party, and there may well be developments on that front, particularly in terms of when clubs have to get their wages down to those levels, before the new rules are brought in.

I don't think that's the case. Prior to the coronavirus, the plans to upgrade to category one were very much back on the table, certainly beyond the 'that's the ultimate aim' comments of previous seasons. Obviously the situation since then will have put all plans for further spending on hold.

In terms of cuts, there's not really much scope for them to make them to any great degree. The club is obliged to spend a certain amount on its academy - and maintain staffing levels - in order to qualify for very significant Premier League grants.

What, do you imagine, is the time-frame for these proposals to take full effect i.e. for clubs, presumably including Town to actually reduce the wages of players who collectively would place us well above these limits if these plans were implemented today?

I think it is a great idea, as long as it implemented throughout football pyramid.

Averages out of 25 players on just under £2,000 a week.

It will force us to use and trust more academy products, but hopefully forces us to start using a proper scouting network to consistently find lower league gems.

No idea, but I assume there will be some staggering into the overall limit as clubs will already have player contracts which will put them above the limit in seasonsto come. I would guess that there may well be some discussion on the limits before their implementation. Think there are ongoing talks between the EFL, the clubs and the PFA about player wage cuts, which may also have some impact on the situation.

A £2.5 Million maximum salary seems unbelievably low when compared to the average championship wage bill of around £36 Million - to become a mid-table championship side in terms of wage bill you would have to multiply it by around 15 times which is ridiculous.

Even to avoid a relegation wage bill, you would have to multiply the league 1 maximum by around 10 times - such a gap between the two leagues seems impossible.

Also not to mention the issues of championship clubs getting relegated with massive wage bills. Either they keep most of their squad and become unfairly good, or they face serious financial consequences having to fit the restrictions.

I'm guessing, as I just mentioned on the news comments, that this would mean a definite no chance of Garbutt signing permanently?

You'd imagine it would make it harder to make any limit but, of course, we don't know how things might be staggered, assuming they are, or what the finally agreed limit might actually be.

I don't really think it's likely anyway. I've known Championship clubs have watched him this season for a while and I imagine someone will see him as a bit of a bargain addition. When we spoke to him in October and asked him about staying he said “If we’re promoted, Championship football would be a pull", which I think was telling about his ambitions even then.

Then along comes a Champ club- and offers that gem £5k a week. And off he goes, despite the fact that our gates could have paid his wages...

The higher clubs enjoying advantage are never going to vote for it.

100%.

We all know that football needs to cut its cloth accordingly, but to align ourselves to the purse strings of the likes of Accrington and Burton instead of Forest, Sheffield Weds, Middlesbrough et al would be like signing our death warrant.

If fans aren't allowed back in until next year, whilst clubs are playing behind closed doors, then the salary cap will be way down the list of problems compared to restructuring leagues part way through the season, as a plethora of clubs go bang.
