https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/552036

This petition set up by Dorking Wanderers last night seems to have got a bit of attention on Twitter. I think that football games are to be shown in Vue cinemas yet (very reduced capacity etc.) pilots have not restarted at outdoor stadiums says it all, really.

May be of interest to some!

I was being flippant. But what about the people who attend thinking it's safe, but then may catch it?

I assumed you would be one of the people to want this blindly.

It’s no different to going to a pub/restaurant/supermarket/cinema really.

Masks on, sanitise, keep your distance.

It’s not ‘blindly’ is it, measures have been put in place, clubs have worked hard on stuff and we know the risks.

The Royal Albert hall is opening soon at 50% capacity plus the O2 arena are having their first concert again soon.

We're all at risk if the infection rate goes through the roof, whether you set foot outside your door or not.

So perhaps, don't help drive it by congregating in concourses, tunnels, buses, trains...

Measures have been put in place in the ground, but no measure can mitigate 30-40k people leaving en masse onto Trains, Buses etc.

Not sure how you reconcile this position

Plenty of time is spent by people on here (rightly) moaning about the different resources at clubs disposal but in this case some of the clubs should suffer because Ipswich will be fine?

Your non-league example doesn't work as there will be clubs within the same division that can't have the same rules.

For instance it's much easier to have somewhere like Reading allow matches than QPR.

Once again it seems to boil down to "but I want to watch football".

Why does it have to be a race to the bottom?

I can already watch football. It boils down to a very real threat to the future of the organised game in this country, but you carry on making sweeping judgements of those with a different viewpoint to your own.

So, go watch it at a local non-league ground where the risk is considerably less to both yourself and those around you.

No thanks, I'd rather my 75 year old dad doesn't get COVID and die.

As others have mentioned, why do people fail to grasp that standing in an open field watching Felixstowe is very different to cramming through the tiny tunnels and archaic infrastructure that Portman Road has?

Having watched the FA Cup match with 'Hashtag Thingy' and Soham a few days ago any sense of 'Social Care and Protection' disappeared right out of the window. Until this virus is controlled (and NOT by Mr Trump) lots of things will have to suffer.......Deepest Apologies now waits for down arrows.

Yes but people want to watch football because it's unfair there's a pandemic.

I'm sure those pushing for this are purely doing it for the integrity of keeping clubs afloat, which is why they are probably donating money to them all.

I'm not sure season ticket holders up and down the country are still parting with their money solely for the product they are receiving.

It's not a sweeping judgement.

It's a fact based argument and you've decided not to address any of the points I made. Perhaps best to counter the points rather than ignore them?

If you can watch football then why the rush to get back into the ground? You are contributing to the club by watching. Even getting a few thousand into the ground isn't going to change the finances much so it does end up looking like people just want to watch football in person on Saturdays.

Plus:

Health and safety staff
Cleaners
Police
Caterers (?)
Turnstile operators
Stewards

Then factor in extra people on:

Platforms
Trains
Bus stops
Shops

etc etc.

People have to look at the bigger picture. I'm not claiming to know all the answers at all, and yes, there is a very real threat to football clubs here and wider issues re. football money and the injustice of it. But we are also in the middle of a global pandemic and things like this just seem to be used as an excuse to trivialise it for some people.

It is a PANDEMIC for goodness sake.

Considering our season ticket sales I don’t think opening the ground to fans at this stage will make much of a difference to Town; those who return will be season ticket holders who have already paid for their seats and, if I recall correctly, the concourses etc. would be shut so they would be no money coming in there. I guess the argument is it’s the first stage of increasing numbers in the ground to the point where they can start selling tickets for individual matches. The fact is, crowds now or not, that is a long way off.

As an aside, at the moment the lack of fans at the ground - at least in Ipswich - is probably having more impact on the town centre than the club itself.

It is a sweeping judgement, you've repeatedly suggested that anyone who says perhaps there is some way we can have limited numbers of fans back in football stadiums safely is some kind of imbecile who doesn't understand the implications and will do/say anything just to watch football again.

I've neglected to counter every point you have made because I have little interest in a binary argument where either all live football is banned because of covid, or we let 30k back into Portman Road and to hell with the consequences.

I'm trying to suggest that just maybe there is some middle ground to be had. I also don't really believe you fail to grasp the difference between the income from streaming and the income from fans attending games.

I suppose my one question is how can the O2 be opening up to 4700 concert goers in December and the Royal Albert Hall be holding concerts in front of a live audience of 2500 a time over Christmas yet football grounds are an issue?

Don't pretend to understand all the issues raised on this thread, but I do know that if it is deemed safe for me to attend a cinema then it seems inconsistent to not allow limited attendance at the football.

Also European matches are now allowing fans in, Brugges had 9k in attendance at the weekend.
