Windows updates 12:13 - Nov 27 with 2951 views | Herbivore | Jesus H. Christ, how is it that Windows can't seem to do an update without it breaking something on your computer? My internet completely stopped working and after trying numerous simple and more complicated fixes (I used the command prompt, whatever that is) I had to manually change the DNS (whatever that means) to get it working again. Bunch of absolute arseholes. That's an hour of my life I'll never get back.

Windows updates on 16:34 - Nov 27 by Bent_double | You might be right, it restarted itself a few times after the last install was finished, saying it was checking for errors on C:, but didn't seem to find any, I've checked Disk Manager, it says the drives are all OK and error-free. I ran a full defrag on it even though it says it wasn't needed, that took a while too, but the PC does seem to be OK at the moment. I did say to my son that a new hd might be necessary - it's currently a mechanical Western DIgital - was wondering whether it's worth spending the extra and getting a SSD replacement. |
I'd absolutely recommend getting an SSD for the Operating System. Probably only cost you £30 and it makes a massive difference.

Dan decided during the last game that the only thing we had left on here was dishing out ageist abuse to you. Sad, but true.

You think its worth getting a smallish (500gb?) SSD just for the OS? I've looked at a few 2tb SSDs - the current hd is that size, but he doesn't really use much space on it - so I guess I could just add the SSD and keep the current one as a second drive. Any brand recommendations? Do they fit easily inside a PC - I've seen some with trays, are they needed?

Windows updates on 12:14 - Nov 27 by Keno | one of the main reasons to switch to a Mac [Post edited 27 Nov 2020 12:15]

I've spent a lot more hours than just the one yelling profanities at my Mac when I've had problems following updates, many of which have been for stuff I don't want, need or use, like iTunes. Also had blackscreen 3 times in the 6 years I've been using the Mac. However, I must say their telephone support is superb - immediate, helpful & have always managed to restore it (had to allow them to take joint control, but it was carefully explained & controlled, with their visible handing back & logging out at the end).

I used Framework on an original Amstrad! 🤣 1993-4

And Movie maker ... but apparently there's something in the photos app that's sort of similar.

Windows updates on 12:38 - Nov 27 by wkj | I just want to take this chance from one techie to another to make a totally unrelated point... ITIL is bollucks... thanks for listening. |
ITIL is a framework, a system, like 4-3-3. If you have good management that can pick the right parts of the framework to apply for your situation and what your organisation needs then ITIL is very useful. If you have poor management that put in a rigid system and don't make alterations based on circumstances or changes in the marketplace/technology/economy then continue along the same path regardless of results then ITIL is rubbish. It's a bit like saying the FIFA coaching badge is rubbish because managers that hold it get poor results. But then Klopp etc. also hold the badge.

An SSD is the most immediately noticeable upgrade you can do to any computer. Get it done. Can't help with brands, I think Samsung are supposed to be good. I have Crucial MX. Put your OS on the SSD along with any programs you use often. Put any media on the HDD along with remaining programs.

You could buy the worst SSD on the market and it would be ten times faster than a spinning disk. In a desktop PC a SATA drive should work, but if you have an NVME socket then use that.

I'd always recommend having the OS on a separate drive to the rest of the system, SSD or not. That said, SSD is a really a must these days for the operating system. 256GB should be enough, if you've got the money for 500GB that would be even better, means less management dealing with clutter. As for brands, can't really go wrong with either Samsung or Crucial. Crucial will probably be a touch cheaper. They are very small, should be easy to fit inside a PC, I'd be surprised if the case doesn't have somewhere to fit them. Without knowing what your case is, I can't really advise on whether you need a tray. You may also want to check out if the motherboard supports an M.2 SSD. They are basically very small (form factor) SSDs that plug right into the motherboard. These days they aren't that much more expensive than a "standard" SSD.

Windows updates on 13:34 - Nov 28 with 546 views | Bent_double | Many thanks Dan & Durovigutum, it's been a while since I messed around inside a PC, but I'll buy an SSD, install it and try to clone the exisiting partition onto it, see how that goes. Thanks guys!
