Imagine Sir Bob's feelings everytime he had to take a potential new signing to see Mr Cobbold, he must have been tempted to get there at 7am.

I think what got to me most was that George, having determined that Town "lacked ambition", turned down a move and then ..... promptly stayed where he was for 3 more years.

That is a John Cobbold story that I do not remember seeing before but, as you say, it is a standard tale.

I do remember us being close to signing George Ley though.

From what I’ve heard, it was the most hospitable club in England during the Cobbolds’ time. It must have been a phenomenal club to be at in those days.

For all the booze and living life to the full, they were no mugs. They understood people and employing two future England managers had nothing to do with luck. John and Patrick Cobbold were amazing characters. I’d love to have met them - after a full English breakfast, obviously.

Any reason he had to take a cab from the station to the ground?!

I do have John Cobbold's autograph in my collection, so I did meet him (sort of).

I have heard a story very similar, which may or may not be this one, where JC asked something somewhat ribald regarding donkeys which made the player concerned blush and led to him not signing.

I know that story but not sure if that was George Ley. I think most prospective signing's got to meet Mister John which could be a good thing-or not.

No, if we are talking about the same photo it was Mister John and Mister John's driver that met him at the station.

I was told who that was but I can't remember whether it was George Ley or someone else, would have been that sort of period, I think.

Was not interested in talking football and only wanted to talk money.

Sounds very like a bullet dodged.

I also wonder if he was being lined up as a back-up for Mills as much as moving Mills into midfield to accommodate him.

Old Gatesy was so good, he used to carry a Barca player around with him when dribbling the ball.

Didn't really sign back ups in those days so wouldn't have thought so

Yes he was going to be for the first team.

We finished 1969/70 with Tommy Carroll at RB and Colin Harper at LB and Mick Mills in MF.
Started 1970/71 the same way although Colin Harper was not then the established LB that he became in 1971/72.

Think there was also a place at Kirton? Think I read that in ‘Time On The Grass’? Again, not Ipswich fringes, but maybe a 20 minute drive.

Yes, I've been trying to remember its name. I think that was where John C lived at that time.

If you want to sign a player, I think it was common courtesy even then to send someone from the club to meet them at the station. Kevin Beattie ended up signing for Town rather than Liverpool after they failed to send anyone to meet him at the station.
