Whilst the blame for our world-leading mortality rate sits squarely on the shoulders of the government, it doesn't really help matters that many people seem to be utter jeb-ends.

I think the point is (in the UK) we either wake up to the issue and do whatever we can to address it, or we are scared to address a sensitive issue and do sfa.

I know which one I think is morally right. You can't make a omelette without cracking some eggs and if some people get a little uncomfortable with the issues, so be it. Be all means do it in a sensitive manner, but to ignore it is unforgivable imho.

If this had happened next week then the attendees would have been on the hook for 800 GBP each. Given the size of some of the families that could easily be 8000+ GBP for some families. That would have certainly focused some minds.

Now I fear it's likely to happen again at some point. Since last April there has been a concerted effort to get the message across to the community but it's just not worked. Perhaps the vectors of the messages are wrong as you say but I do feel a lot has been tried.

Yeah, it's a load of b0llocks and doesn't really go any way to justifying 400 bellends living it up at a wedding when nearly 2000 people are dying every day from Covid.

Find it to be bollox by all means, but it wasn't presented as a justification of the wedding.

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Ha! Excellent.

On my trip to India I was told solemnly that India suffers a rather high casualty rate on the roads.

Even in my relatively short-term experience there I could say I was surprised that it wasn't far higher.

I believe I read once that the Indian driving test consisted of driving forwards in a straight line for 100 yards and reversing back, and that was it.

Speak to old bikers about the old motorbike test in the UK. The guy testing was on foot, he'd tell you to ride round the block and you'd do an emergency stop on the way past. That was it!

To be fair I did my CBT at the old Ipswich Airfield, and that consisted of driving around a few cones on a moped and away you go.

I did mine, knocked all the cones over and still passed.

Brilliant, I remember the day being a little cold and damp, and the instructors were all just sat in the terminal drinking tea watching from a far.

I remember buying a little Suzuki and wondering why it was revving really high, didn't know about gears as I only learnt on an moped, safe to say the residents in Kesgrave/Martlesham were kept up a few nights by the sound of a gasket about to explode.

my poor wife was traumatised after travelling from bagdogra airport to kalimpong earlier in the year by taxi. it didn't help when she started to look for the seat belts in back to put on and he said its ok don't need them and proceeded to put his on.
a 45 miles trip takes 3 hours because its all switchbacks and that's him going flat out flat out.

I do remember learning in Nigeria many religion followers are fatalists. First time it became apparent was when a driver of mine took a blind bend at speed and when I had words, he told me "God would protect us".

Such fatalism is more common so I understand amongst religious people than non believers. Whether that is play here, I don't know.

Definitely not the time to be putting your life/health in the hands of your faith though.

I've had the same maniac drivers in a fair few countries where the population would be considered pretty religious.

Special mention to Bolivia where I was on a bus on a gravel road up in the mountains. Every time he attempted to overtake someone on what was just a single lane 'road' with blind corners, he would take his hat off and cross himself before doing it. No one else on the bus seemed bothered in the slightest, while I was sh1tting a brick the whole time.

Did you cycle the "world's most dangerous" road near La Paz? Done it a couple of times, the down hill tarmac section I managed to beat all the Kiwis/Aussies/Yanks - awesome fun albeit a bit unforgiving if you go over the edge...

When I was trained after a few months, on the dangers of living/working in Liberia, we were told the highest cause of death for NGO workers in the developing world was road accidents, followed by Malaria. And statistically the typical death was a 37 year old man on a single posting.

It a week before my 37th birthday...

Although in Liberia the roads were so sh1t you had more chance of starvation from getting stuck in the bush due to the mud. Google "Liberian muddy roads" for some fun pics :-)

Yeah some of the potholes needing filling in admittedly.

On this road here you can barely make out the white lines:

Yesodey Hatorah Senior Girls' School.

Part of the community there and quite possibly the people who run it were part of the crowd?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yesodey_Hatorah_Senior_Girls%27_School

'The school has been rated "inadequate" by Ofsted for the highly restrictive education it provided to its pupils. The Charedi community does not have access to television, the Internet, or other media, and members of the community aim to lead modest lives governed by the codes of Torah observance. In 2008, it emerged that nine pupils, supported by their parents, had refused to sit a Key Stage 3 Shakespeare test on The Tempest because they felt the character of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice was anti-semitic. There have also been recurring controversies at the school due to failures to teach sex education, the theory of evolution, or various aspects of British history.'

I am of course not willing to pass comment.

These people are blind, stupid and selfish. If they are happy to sign a form that says they won’t be requiring NHS treatment and can pay for their own funeral, that would be fine. But that isn’t enough because they are a real threat to others. Innocent people who they could kill or ruin the lives of. ‘Uman rights? Yep, I’m all in favour and people can do exactly what they like - unless it affects others.

If they do not wish to conform, the solution is simple. Intern them until the problem has gone. Who pays for the internment? They do. It is not unreasonable to protect the majority who have sacrificed a lot let alone those on the front line dealing with this.

I remember using taxis in Egypt some years ago & saw that the taxi drivers refused to turn on their headlights at night. I asked our driver why and he replied "Because I'm a very good driver".

Very narrow-minded, the same as many religion based institutions unfortunately.

More concerned with perpetuating religious beliefs than educating the kids.

The school has distanced itself from the incident by saying the bookings where managed by a third party. The third party of course could have been amongst the party attendees.

My apologies. I missed that.

But someone connected to the school had to be involved in one way or another to gain access and to get away with some fair amount of comings and goings needed to organise that event.

Dunno mate, it's crazy anyway, that on this instance, and every other where there are large gatherings, that those involved will find an angle to justify themselves.

I've got the TV on right now, and there's medical staff in tears where they're struggling.

Is there honestly anyone left out there who is unaware of what's going on and can excuse this behaviour?

I really did worry about this sort of thing last year. As a vaccine is made public, significant number of people will take stupid risk feeling safe. It is staggering how many people genuinely think vaccines will cure as well as train the immune system.

I can't speak for the jewish bods involved, but this article might provide some insight:

https://catholicsocialthought.org.uk/covid-and-human-dignity/

Sure it'll get ripped apart and I'm not saying I agree with the points it contains - just to offer a little window on how a religious person might be thinking right now.

Interesting. Batsh*t crazy being aligned with the deniers, but interesting nonetheless. Seems to be lacking consideration of the greater good or helping one’s neighbour. Sure, lockdowns are something we all want to avoid. But they are a proven approach when used correctly. They also don’t have to go on so long, again when used correctly in an appropriate response to a contagious disease.

They’d be better off directing their misplaced moral superiority towards the idiots in charge who have mismanaged this, rather than pick on one of the response tool. Any tool in the hands of someone incompetent is useless.
