I always thought Steve Whitton was a great player and never got the credit he deserved.
I also loved David Lowe as a kid when most I used to sit with always moaned about him. I can’t quite remember how prolific he was but a lot better than what we currently have up front. | | | |

Lovely guy too.Parents used to own the old General Gordon on Cox Lane and Steve and his wife Julie came for dinner one Sunday , I was only 11 , can you imagine .All my Christmases had come at the same time

As for The General Gordon.... I used to go in there a lot back in the day, met my future ex wife in there.
What year were your parents in there? I remember the bullsh1t Essex bloke who was replaced by big ITFC fan Steve - who then got nicked at football and couldn't get an alcohol licence. | |

James Scrowcroft - I know he made a lot of appearances but I don’t think his true worth was ever appreciated by some.

Also from the Whitton era, Paul Goddard. He played well for us for a couple of seasons but doesn't really get much mention.

I worked in the Earl Roberts (as it was by then) in the late eighties and met the current Mrs Deano.
Was an Anglia Hosts / Chef & Brewer pub by then.
Had been drinking in there for about a year or so and the landlord often used to try and get me to work there. The day after my 18th birthday he asked again, I said yeah, surprised he brought back a form for me to fill in, of course I had to put my date of birth in, can’t repeat what he called me when he saw it. Also The penny dropped with him why I had suddenly changed my mind about working there.
Good times, worked under a few managers there. Was a great pub late eighties early nineties.
I won’t hold finding my future wife against it, after all she so like one of the family now after 30 odd years. [Post edited 28 Jan 2021 8:35]

RB David Wright was certainly undervalued if not underrated.
Eric Gates was a bit overlooked but in fairness it was a great side
Always felt Paul Cooper was a bit underrated, maybe not so much by town fans but certainly in wider circles. | |

Allan Hunter. He was overshadowed by Beattie for obvious reasons, but was one of Ipswich’s most important players of the 70s. He was with Beattie a doubt for the FA Cup Final. Of the two, if I’d had to choose one or the other to play, it’d have been him.
In the 80s and 90s, Mick Stockwell. Better player than he looked, played 100s of games all over the pitch. He was one of those players that ‘glued’ a team together.
Early 2000s Mark Venus. I thought he was a joke of a player. A real makeweight in the Steve Sedgely deal. Wrong. He was brilliant for us. Strong, great attitude and more skilful than he looked. One hell of a shot too.
In recent years, I can’t think of any. A sad commentary on the tide of dross that’s passed through the club. |  | | |
