Who are Ipswich most underrated players of all time ? on 08:46 - Jan 28 by Churchman | Allan Hunter. He was overshadowed by Beattie for obvious reasons, but was one of Ipswich’s most important players of the 70s. He was with Beattie a doubt for the FA Cup Final. Of the two, if I’d had to choose one or the other to play, it’d have been him. In the 80s and 90s, Mick Stockwell. Better player than he looked, played 100s of games all over the pitch. He was one of those players that ‘glued’ a team together. Early 2000s Mark Venus. I thought he was a joke of a player. A real makeweight in the Steve Sedgely deal. Wrong. He was brilliant for us. Strong, great attitude and more skilful than he looked. One hell of a shot too. In recent years, I can’t think of any. A sad commentary on the tide of dross that’s passed through the club. |
All very good. Venus couldn't half take a free kick too.

I guess it depends on your era... Marcus is certainly one of the best strikers we've ever had, but he doesn't beat Mariner, Brazil or Whymark for me. Someone older than me will probably say they don't beat Phillips or Crawford. Just be glad you got to see him and that 99-01 team...

Who are Ipswich most underrated players of all time ? on 08:27 - Jan 28 by MattinLondon | James Scrowcroft - I know he made a lot of appearances but I don’t think his true worth was ever appreciated by some. Also Alun Armstrong. Not really an exciting player but dependable and always had a goal in him. |
True. Scowie was only really appreciated the season after he left. A big loss.

I’d agree with that. My dad goes all the way back to just before the war (McLuckie, Tommy Parker after the war etc) and for him, it’s a fine line between Phillips/Crawford and Mariner/Brazil but ultimately the latter pair gets the nod as the best pairing. Johnson Whymark were pretty devastating in their day too. I liked the Shefki Bent partnership and the Mathie Marshall one. Both excellent and very entertaining, but a level down, of course. But I’m not knocking Stewart at all. A really good player, lethal in front of goal and great positional sense. Very different to David Johnson (the later one - also a cracking player. Nice bloke too) but more suited to the top level in my view. [Post edited 28 Jan 2021 9:20]

I love Stewie and what he did when we finished 5th was incredible, a true great. But I guess he doesn't have the longevity of some of the stars from the 70s / 80s era.

Couldn't agree more. Funny how perhaps our two most underrated players were left backs. Gavin Johnson might come into that category too. Even that left back who some seem to think was our worst ever player was nowhere near as bad as some say. Poor old Harbey!
Who are Ipswich most underrated players of all time ? on 09:32 - Jan 28 with 2952 views | JohnWarksTash | Laurie Sivell In my mind a far better keeper than Cooper despite being 3ft tall. Agile, good hands and knew how to distribute the ball. I was never a big fan of Cooper. His reactions were second to none but his movement of the ball was dreadful.

Who are Ipswich most underrated players of all time ? on 08:09 - Jan 28 by ZondervansTash | I always thought Steve Whitton was a great player and never got the credit he deserved. I also loved David Lowe as a kid when most I used to sit with always moaned about him. I can’t quite remember how prolific he was but a lot better than what we currently have up front. |

Because he was/is such a nice guy he would be quite near the top of my Most Overrated list. This despite the fact that he scored a penalty in a World Cup Quarter Final !

After reading the OP I was going to say Mason too. Excellent player. I see some have mentioned Stockwell. I don't think he was underrated as I had him at God status already. Neil Thompson too. I'll be tongue-tied should I ever meet them.

Who are Ipswich most underrated players of all time ? on 08:16 - Jan 28 by Metal_Hacker | Absolutely....stood in for Mick Mills for games and games on end with no real mention Lovely guy too.Parents used to own the old General Gordon on Cox Lane and Steve and his wife Julie came for dinner one Sunday , I was only 11 , can you imagine .All my Christmases had come at the same time All that aside a proper footballer and truly under rated |
I also saw him in his final years at Plymouth Argyle. Still a great player even then who could do a bit of everything very well. A full-size Mick Mills [Post edited 28 Jan 2021 10:16]

It was the Round of 16 where he scored the penalty (against Mexico), not the Quarter Final. He did come on as a sub in the QF against Germany though, and in the Semi Final against Italy.

I was going to say Westie and/or Richards. We'd be in a lot better place right now if we had those two in their prime linking up down the left. Not world beaters, but vastly superior to anything we've had recently.
