The best players you can think of that don’t get the plaudits they truly deserved ?

After reading the OP I was going to say Mason too. Excellent player.

I see some have mentioned Stockwell. I don't think he was underrated as I had him at God status already. Neil Thompson too. I'll be tongue-tied should I ever meet them.

I thought Neil Thompson was a good full back. Everything we don’t have now. Strong tackler, reliable, good shot on him and could take a great corner.

He was always described as ‘former nappy salesman Neil Thompson’. Poor bloke. Carried that title like a millstone around his neck for years. It always made me laugh.

My father said Danny Hegan was a quality player

Trevor Whymark another gem

they would be make the all-time second eleven of many of the older posters. Quality true enough, but somewhat understating it. Having them now would be like suddenly having regular players from the top 4 or 5 of the Premiership.

Kevin Wilson
Steve Whitton
Simon Milton
Paul Mason
Neil Thompson
Jamie Clapham
Marcus Stewart
Alan Lee
Grant Leadbitter

Not sure any who regularly witnessed Wilson would describe him as underrated. Think everyone at the time knew how good he was. Wouldn't personally have Alan Lee in such exalted company, but I guess that might be me just underrating. Otherwise, great list.

If someone didn't underrate certain players, then no one wouldn't be suggested as underrated I guess. I'm with you on Alan Lee though...overrated in my book.

Ian Cranson. Never saw him get beaten in the air.

Not too many on here will have a first hand opinion on this but from the 1961/62 team I think Dougie Moran does not get the recognition that he deserves.

Phillips and Crawford do (rightly) for their goals and Stephenson and Leadbetter for the roles that they played in Alf Ramsey's system but Moran gets rather overlooked. He scored 14 league that season which is obviously way down on Phillips with 28 and Crawford with 33 but he did make a major contribution to that wonderful season.

I have a lot smaller sample size than most of you but from my time I'll say Michael Chopra. Yes he's supposedly a bit of a scumbag but I thought he was decent enough on the pitch. 14 goals in one season for us wasn't bad, especially as Jewell often stuck him up front on his own despite lacking great physical attributes. A poacher of a striker, we haven't really had one since, except maybe Brett Pitman. One of our better forwards of the 2010s who gets a bit ignored.

Speaking of which, Brett Pitman is underrated I think. Always good for a goal off the bench despite not really fitting our style of play at the time. Certainly wasn't a target man that it often seemed like he was being asked to be.

Good call. His problem was coming too soon after Russ and Butch.

I would go along with that having watched the championship winning side, also i rate highly Billy Baxter and Andy Nelson a formidiable defensive duo, of the modern era Gatesy, Clive Woods and Diesel Peter Morris were all underated

Steve McCall most definitely, quality player

Romeo Zondervan oozed class

Darren Currie, no pace but never gave the ball away, a joy to watch had the ball under his spell

Pablo, anyone who didn't enjoy watching him doesnt know football imo, brilliant player dont understand some of the criticism he gets on here

James Scowcroft watch the promotion season, absolutely incredible

I always rated Bryan Hamilton - constantly worked hard and scored some decent goals for us. Did well when he left us too.

I was going to say Westie and/or Richards. We'd be in a lot better place right now if we had those two in their prime linking up down the left. Not world beaters, but vastly superior to anything we've had recently.

Given the stick Richards got from some of our supposed supporters, he should definitely be in the underrated category. Think he was a more than reasonable player who’s game suffered as a result of mindless criticism during games. Reminds a bit of the reaction to a much more recent left back

When we talk about the golden era Brian Talbot hardly ever gets a mention.

And at the beginning of that era we had Bryan Hamilton and David Best.

A few years earlier Billy Baxter.

Ah Gavin Johnson. Phil Whelen too made an instant impression. What happened to Eddie Youds? I'm not sure what I mean by that, but he was meant to be the next best thing.

Darren Currie. Real skilful, the lack of pace is what did him. But boy could he make the ball stick to his foot.

I'd actually have him as high on most overrated. Came into a side that would attack with pace and have Horlock sitting as insurance. Currie starts and a lot of our play slowed down and we didn't hit Bent/Kuqi quick enough. How he's talked about you'd want more goals and assists for me.

Didn't Whelan score in his first 2 or 3 games for us? Neither of them replaced Linighan well enough I thought.

I don’t think he’s rated high enough

Best player I’ve ever seen play for Ipswich

He is the best player to play for Ipswich in the post Robson era that's for sure.

I don't think Darryl murphy got the credit he deserved.

a shining light in an otherwise awful side.
