underway in Myanmar, by the looks of things. Aung San Suu Kyi detained.

Seemed to me that the military never left control. Certainly the behaviour of Aung San Suu Kyi towards the Rohingya never seemed the actions of someone who was allowed to say what they wanted.

At least I think that is what people hoped, if that was what she wanted to say then she's certainly not deserving of the accolades she's received.

EDIT: Just caught up.

The whole thing is very much like watching Norwich play Leeds, is it possible for both teams to lose?

Not dissimilar to Egypt. where the military took a couple of steps back to let civilians have a go, then took over again when they didn't like what was happening/saw things weren't working.

Sadly, with regard to the Rohingya, I think those are ASSK's own feelings. She might oppose military rule, but it doesn't mean she lacks prevalent local prejudicves against the muslim minority (plus the insurgency was not entirely a figment of government propaganda).

Common media/popular error to ascribe Western liberal values to activists fighting authoritarian rule in other parts of the globe. Whereas in fact they represent either personal ambition (c.f. Thailand) or simply another tribe/faction (much of Africa and the Middle East).

I've never heard of Myanmar... had to look it up when I heard the news this morning and it's what was Burma, but no idea why the name change.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I have every sympathy with his distress. The Burmese have endured decades of military dictatorship. Also, the Tatmadaw have been linked with dodgy stuff like the Golden Triangle drugs trade.

But ASSK and her associates are not exactly angels, either.

No, but it’s the people that suffer. Speaking to my colleagues, and ones that I know that are at home in Myanmar at the moment, there’s a lot of anger.

So I can’t really see how people can take enjoyment in it.

What exactly is distasteful about opposing both a military state or a freedom fighter turned populist, both of which seem quite happy to commit genocides?

I thought that would have been the basic out-of-the-box tasteful opinion.

I was just trying to sum up my feelings in a simple way in context of this being a football board. Not everyone who posts here knows the ins and outs, I felt it was a simplified way of saying balls to both sides. I very much agree with Newcs the main people harmed by it all are civilians stuck in the middle.

If anyone felt it had any other connotation then I apologise. Surely people on here know me well enough by now to know my thoughts on authoritarianism.
