But a man dying that has lives a fine life to exceed 100 years old should not be seen as more tragic than the hundreds of people dying at less than half that age.
The news coverage is going to be ridiculous OTT for Captain Tom and social media will be bordering on bizarre from some people.
He led a fine life and seemed a wonderful human being. His charity efforts were lovely but it was more a movement of support towards the NHS being recognised in his name.
Calling these things out only ever lead to backlash so I am prepared for that but the grief in these things from strangers seems to be more about them than the victim.
This country went insane when Diana died so what do you expect. Rip Cpt Tom; what a life.
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
The characters are quite unlikeable at the beginning, but they go on a journey, and we go with them. By the end most people, myself included, love them. And if equality for LGBTQ+ people means something to you then you will be touched by the way the show simply treats it as a given. It kind of shows us how adults can and should behave, and how a society can be kind, and a community inclusive.
And then there is a "Making of" that needs to be saved to the end, that has moments of profound, deep, human connection and empathy. It's just life affirming.
OK I'm getting back into it again then. Cheers for that
I'll leave it because it isn't a great timing but these things never will be. I just don't understand people that revel in sharing grief and tragedy of strangers to be noticed
Going to be horrendous when the Queen pops off. I will be completely disinterested in that one
It is. I remember when Thatcher had her ‘state funeral’ and I was on a dial-in in Parliament Street. There was a lot of noise as the box etc passed by. The people on the dial in said ‘what’s that?’ I replied ‘Thatchers funeral’. ‘Aren’t you going to watch?’ they asked. ‘Nah, it’s bad enough having to pay for it’. I responded. It’s how I feel about such things, including Lady Di’s. For me they are private affairs, to be paid for by the family.

I'll second it, first episode almost lost me, but it is one of the best comedy series I've ever watched, and is also one of the most heart warming programmes I've ever watched.
As matey says, the way it handles LGBT issues is brilliant, because it just treats it as an entirely normal thing, which is exactly what it is.
I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun.
I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

And let's face it, contracting it out to the private sector is what she would have wanted...

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
Makes a change from one of the occupants doing it with his trousers...
I suppose t hat if millions of people donated to charity because of him and what he did, a large number will be interested in the fact he died, and are saddened by it?

I think you mean uninterested. Disinterested means something quite different.
Again, I don't think they're making it more tragic. It's just more newsworthy considering his popularity and actions over the last year.
What are you seeing that makes you feel it is being treated as more tragic?
Indeed. It's a cruel irony in that the pandemic is what got him well known and all the accolades, then ultimately was the end of him. He was a beacon of hope, and I can see why people would be upset that it was snuffed out by the same thing which ignited it. But I don't think anyone's saying it's MORE tragic. You couldn't do an article on every single one of the 100,000 who've died.
It's sad and probably natural to want to mourn somebody's passing that has touched your life in some way, even if remotely. What I struggle with is the way it has to be done so publically now, as mentioned, Pricess Di seemed to set a new low for this and I really struggled to believe what I was seeing at the time.
I have enormous respect for the man and the life he led, but am happy to just let his family and those that knew him remember him the way they wish. (Yes I see the irony in posting this on here)
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
