I always thought Come On Pilgrim was their debut album (turns out that it's apparently a "mini LP". Surfer Rosa is ace though!

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

As a bit of a metal nut in my youth, it would probably have to be Appetite for Destruction. All considered dull mainstream now, but it hit like a train when it landed.

But then Metallica's and Iron Maiden's firsts were great too. And then later Faith No More's We Care A Lot.

I use to love a bit of Marillion too, so Script for a Jester's Tear is a worthy mention.

Hard to pick as there have been so many good first albums across all genres. There's a good argument for a lot of bands' first albums being their best.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

I haven't experienced any your Mum jokes since my Mum kicked the bucket when I was 23! Takes me back!

Thunder and Ian Dury pretty much sums up my Dad's taste though (and a considerable chunk of my early influences). Saw Thunder supporting ZZ Top a few years ago and they've still got it, Danny Bowes has got one of the best, most underrated voices in rock.

Great voice, they deserved to be much more highly acclaimed.
Danny Bowes moves on stage though like an old drunk uncle at a wedding reception.
