I swear I recall Evans having ambitions to build a complex of entertaining and commerce around PR when he first came in - did I dream that?

Some entertainment in Portman Road would have been nice.

It is a 50/50 things with out of towners really - Living in Town I loved going to PR, when I moved to Diss I can't tell you how often I got to Copdock dreading the last little bit of the ride. We do have a considerable following of out of town supporters - if IBC brokered a match day shuttle agreement with Town, or something like that - I could see the appeal.

However, Portman Road and the memories do beat out convenience for me overall.

Tip to make the last bit of the journey from Copdock a bit better.

Stop off at the Brook Inn, have a beer then walk the rest of the way, finishing off with another beer at the Black Horse. It is about a an hour but is quite a pleasant stroll. Or if you an't be arsed with the walk, it's a quick walk to the park and ride, or the bus from Tesco.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

Maybe, although FY's not there anymore and, as I say, I don't think Brett J is the main driving force behind this as I understand it.

I always wanted Frank to be our manager but that ship has sailed and it wouldn't work out now anyway.

Although I have reservations about the takeover it is a no brainer, we need a bit of something. At the risk of getting flamed I think ME is an ok guy but it's plain we are going backwards.

One thing I welcome is ME keeping a 5% stake as reported. This is not the end of ME.

Not sure what's to like about a new stadium. I like our stadium, it is part of me.

I think if we moved I would 100% give it all up.

What about the possibility of redeveloping part or all of the ground - with maybe extra facilities - in situ?

Is that so different to the North and South stands being rebuilt in the early 2000s?

To perhaps be a little controversial, the club doesn't really need all the extra capacity we gained then. Attendances above 25k are extremely rare - and have been in the whole lifetime of the present N and S stands. We could, maybe, lose three or four thousand seats in return for extra facilities which bring money into ITFC and help support the football team.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I wouldn't be opposed to building a new stadium on site but I would like it to be a la Prince Charles's Poundbury project - and I think that would be such a media coup.

I don't think for one minute we should reduce capacity, that is just a backward move, what will we do if we get successful? You can't really expand purpose built stadia that easy.

People moaned about The West Stand development in the early 80's being our downfall but it really wasn't. People also question the North Stand and Churchman developments but we couldn't stay in cow sheds.

Just doing the North straight after South was the issue for me, just needed to take stock when one was done and then settle then do the next....especially when North so much more expensive due to the lack of space.

It's a bit like Trigger's broom for me - as longas Portman Road remains broadly the same as it always has been - whilst being smartened up - then I'll be happy. I'd hate an out of town stadium, Portman Road is exactly the type of away ground I like to go to. Is always a good day out for the London fans.....get to Liv St, sit on train for any hour and when you get off you can see it.

I think you'd need to do something fairly high-density and integrated like Poundbury, purely because of the constraints of the site. Which doesn't stop it being done attractively at the same time.

The scarf and the fact he lived in London for 5 years suggests he might understand football (and not soccer) in the UK.

Also interesting when he lived and worked in London. Five years up to 2001. And where were ITFC then?

You can if you factor it into the design, that's exactly what Brighton did for example?

Oh I see, I suppose that is more palatable - although how can we develop the area around it, what area?

The area around the football club is so run down. If we were an established football club in the Premier League, I would like to think it would attract enough money into the area that this would be a project that would thrive. If there are rich people regularly watching football at PR, some of them will spend money on the local theatre performances and one who sees potential could easily invest. That sort of thing.

If the owners themselves (or even just one of the consortium) falls in love with the town they might be moved to invest in more than just the club.

One way or another, I hope the area can be regenerated and the club run far more professionally and cared for from cleaning rooves right through to drainage, the pitch, match-day entertainment and properly managing fitness and injuries.

I don't think he's the main man in this project, just one of a number of investors, nevertheless will presumably have some influence.

Phil, I might be looking too much into this, but your language with “will have” makes it seem like you are confident it will be completed?

Even a lot of the out-of-town grounds have the same issue. Reading, for example, is horrendous to get into and away from.

You'd go back to supporting the Hammers you daft old sod. I'd probably support Colchester cos I was born there, and only remember at the last minute they did the biggest comedy soul free stadium move possibly ever. And just give up innit.

Nice to see your name pop up again on here :)

I’m a Diss guy.

Getting the train is so convenient and is part of my match day routine. Portman Road is a perfect ground for this. This must be the same for all the away fans too.

I’d absolutely hate for the ground to be moved.

This is all wild speculation at the moment (and was probably done when ME invested too) but the point about convenience and the train would still hold if an out-of-town stadium were with a station. In fact it could be designed specifically to make the logistics of away and home fans more straightforward too.

The bigger issue is about history. If the ground can be fit for purpose where it is and it remains at the heart of the local community that has to be the ideal.

It is much less a part of the town (city?) but I wonder how the fans and people in general felt and still do about Colchester's move.

And for those who would be happy for the ground to move, I wonder how far is acceptable? Clearly the largest extreme I can think of was MK Dons which is very different from relocating to a larger area within the town still.

Someone mentioned Col Us stadium the other day as the typical model. I'll bet money if you ask most Col U fans they'd rather still be at Layer Rd. As much as a dump as it was, give me a dump with character over a soulless edge of towner any day.
