Had a quick look at the pic of Millwall 96 ripping up seats after we failed to get playoffs and they got relegated. Comment was done us in the car park too reading down says Ipswich was game and that a Millwall fan got stabbed. Any truth in this? Anyone around that was there?

The two who were stabbed were up towards what was the dole centre. Mark Stephenson was on a one man mission going bonkers after every game that season. It was the season after we won the Uefa Cup as I remember him going crazy against Aberdeen. It was never going to end well. He went to prison for those offences, God knows what he's doing these days.
A football ruck is one thing but the damage he was giving out was off the scale, quite sickening when I look back on it to be honest.

It's mad to think what used to happen in football in the 70's and 80's i used to think it was maybe overhyped as to how bad it was

It was strange that Ipswich did not seem too bothered about the game because a win could have got us a playoff place. I remember Scowie hitting the post but it did seem that we were almost afraid to win.
My ST sort of bordered on where the Millwall fans were although I think they were also to my right as well so I suppose that is why I got the police wanting a statement.
I remember a detective came to my house and wanted me to look at photos of Millwall fans asking if I could identify any of them as doing anything during or after the game.
Annoying really as we were the highest scoring team in the division that season, then when it mattered, we completely dried up. Millwall deserved to go down as they made no effort to win the game. If they had, that would have helped us more but it was a real drab anti-climax.
As for the stabbing incident, I'm 99% sure it didn't happen and if it did, was an unrelated incident. Several Millwall were put on their arses outside and got a lot more back than they expected.
Re: Pompey. Their lot were in the Drum and Monkey and were stormed by a group of Town, then it spilled out on to the streets. Several walking wounded on both sides. I'm a little unsure what the situation with the Drum was at the time as I know it had kind of alternated between being home pub, away pub, mixed. I think this incident led to it being closed for a while, then it becoming a home pub but I could be wrong and have my timeline wrong.
I always thought Millwall were big enough to admit defeat outside that day. A well known face and his merry men had been waiting 18 years for retribution. There was some footage on tv at the time, cctv stuff, that showed this, leading to their un-doing when Plod called. He didn't seem to care, about 10 years ago he bought a single ticket in that corner bit of Churchmans. Millwall responded with 'one ginger Coffee, theres only one...'. he was ushered away by the police shorthly after!

I forgot about that one.
Yes it was a Spurs fan and yes they had got in The West Stand but funnily enough the Spurs fan was from Chantry and it was part football and part personal feud - I know the bloke who did it.

I didn't know the Spurs fan was from Chantry, thought he was from Felixstowe. But hey it's almost 40 years ago... And I could be mixing and matching memories.

I've read through this three or four times now, including once in the voice of Danny Dyer, and I'm still not sure I follow.

It's quite possible that he was from Felixstowe, maybe my memory is fading.
You know NL?

I think you might be talking about "Stov"......A Spurs fan who also followed Ipswich. Good mates with Sladey senior ( Rest in Peace) & lived down Westgate Ward area.

I was 12 and sat right underneath the millwall fans. Got stuck for a little while sheltering up against the executive boxes as the chairs got thrown. Got evacuated over the pitch when they’d stopped. Don’t remember being particularly scared and heard nothing about a stabbing. Do remember being amazed at how big the goals were up close and thinking ‘how is possible to miss?’
Weren't the Millwall fans situated right next to the North Stand? Correct me if I'm wrong, all stood up didn't they, right through the game? Was it due to this that away fans were moved to the other end of Cobbold?

I remember that game. I was 6/7.
I vividly remember them tearing up seats and sitting in a traffic jam in the Portman Road car park as they kicked various cars and looked for fights with anyone who was around.
Put me of going to game for 2/3 years tbh.
This was one of my first games as a fan, I wasn't that old myself. I must have been about 9.
I didn't really appreciate the chaos going on and didn't quite appreciate the enormity of the events or how this wasn't a normal thing given it was a boring draw, did we miss out on a playoff place and they got relegated?
As we were leaving we were walking home and there was shouting in the distance, someone just shouted run and me and my family ran away from the ground towards the underpass near the police station.

Yep, we missed out on the play offs. Millwall came for a draw as they thought it would keep them up, Pompey had a tough away game that they needed to win to have a chance of staying up. A win would have guaranteed us a play off place.

I think they were split across the two.
I was in the North that day and can remember the chairs spinning over towards us. Car park was full of running battles after, my girlfriend was terrified, I thought it was great. Threw a couple of haymakers myself as we couldn’t leave the car park.

Yes, they were at both ends of the Upper Cobbold I think.
My ST is about level with the penalty area at the North Stand end and I am almost certain that there were Millwall supporters to my right as well as the bulk of them being to my left.

Ah, that explains why my memory is of them being at the top end of the Cobbold next to Churchmans.
