I have just been sent a text from somebody who has previously been spot on with info, saying that Paul Cook sent the players home Wednesday midway through training due to lack of effort and intensity.

Apparently all the players left as told, meaning the lunch that was cooked/made had to be donated to the Samaritans.

If true, slightly concerning, but fair play to Cook.

Edit - Clarified this was Wednesday, not yesterday.

I'm not claiming to be some massive 'def info' but from what I hear, there will be a massive sea of change here this summer. Players & staff wise.

Has to be.

Club is rotten, and we have a manager with proven success, let him build his club based on people he can actually trust.

You can't trust this current crop.

Christ, so more or less straight after the new manager has said he was disappointed they couldn't train with the intensity he'd hoped, they put in a lacklustre effort. I guess this is what happens when you have a huge first team squad where half won't be here next season, where the fitness coach is working from home, and they've had two years of nothing but negativity from the manager. What a mess.

It;s also very telling that players are not doing extra time for a new manager when we are still in a lockdown and there isn't much they can do outside of training compared to normal times.

If ever you were going to put a hard shift in after training surely it would be now when you are not going to have other social plans or go places with your families.

Basically it says they are not bothered and don't care. I actually feel sorry for Cook. Guy does not deserve this attitude. What a bunch of rotten wasters our squad is.

Think i'd lost most support for the team in recent years but had a bit if sympathy for them working under Lambert...however that has now totally gone. These players are a joke and i'm really pi*sed off about this.

That's pretty embarrassing. Was that what Cook was referring to when he said the players weren't up to training as full on as he'd hoped or did this come after that?

But according the nearly everyone the players were all good prior to Cooks arrival. Now he's here the players are bad and we're happy he's going Paul Hurst on them? Maybe Paul Hurst was right about the bulk of these players?

Sunday league mob this side. Easy life playing for Ipswich.

Thankfully, we have a top class manager who won't allow it, and secondly, a lot of these players out of contract so can be cleared out.

Hopefully a lot of the players who are still in contract for next season, will be sold (if anybody wants them) or have their contracts settled.

Do you think he is misjudged how big a job he had here? You think he'll quit because it's too big?

PC doesn't come across as someone who would admit he's failed or not up to the challenge so just curious why you think this? I really hope not because he is the only positive within the club currently.

What relevance does that have? The players were scheduled in for a double session on Wednesday and after a poor morning were then sent home at lunch-time (backed up in the thread by another poster).

this is based on nothing but gut feeling.

but I think he knew he had a job on, but chuck in lack of willingness to learn and develop and take on his ideas from a bulk of the players, with an owner that will get him his 2nd 3rd choice players instead of 1st choice targets.

I just cant see ITFC meeting his ambition, ITFC doesn't meet my ambition and ive had my levels beaten out of me over years!

One aspect which has not been covered is that the players are having to "bubble" more stringently than the general populace, in order for matches to be played during Covid. This will have a cumulative mental effect, over time. Lockdown fatigue times ten.

If the regime has heretofore not been very good in terms of keeping up morale or preventing them falling into a rut, that is something which it will take time to work through and get the squad out of. Time we unfortunately don't have endless amounts of. But, like many mental issues, it can't just be "snapped out of".

All the usual arguments - yes they're privileged, yes they are well paid. But that does not endow the players with non-human psychology.

If he can't get us promoted he shouldn't be here long anyway. But why do we all suddenly think it's the players fault when it was Lambert's before? Wouldn't Dyer have been able to do better than Cook has?

it wasn't all lamberts fault. ive never been keen on more than 3/4 of this squad, and their attitudes.

cook is a very good manager in my opinion. based on what he's achieved elsewhere on a consistent level

I agree with this. Imagine working under Lambert the last 2 years, with his relentless negativity and reports that he wouldn't even speak to the players. Now imagine that being the case during lockdown when your life outside of football is more or less zero. Players are human beings, Lambert leaving doesn't undo all the damage. There's very little time to work with the players to try and turn things around given how congested the season is. It's a huge issue. That said, even taking that into account this squad is in need of a big refresh come the summer.

how are other clubs dealing with it?

because that sounds such a 2021 cop out answer to me.

majority of people are gagging to exercise/gym/play football to better their mental state, yet we get stuck with a group of 30/40 of fcking no hopes/drips/losers that are shrinking and shaking in the corner whilst doing so.

fck 'em, cant wait to see the back of them

The difference between ability and attitude.

The players, given the levels they've played at, have the ability to form a decent team capable of doing well at League One level, if properly organised and motivated.

The players seem to have an issue of attitude, be that confidence, morale, laziness or lockdown fatigue. This is enough to negate any skill/experience advantage they may possess.

A third factor could be fitness. If that is not good, then it will rob the team of the stamina to perform over 90 minutes. Also may contribute to the frequent injuries.

Perhaps they've handled it better than we have.

It's rather different excercising and playing sport for leisure - and social - reasons than when it's a job and bubbling actually reduces your social outlets.

My point is the OP implied PC was annoyed after a poor mornings training, before lunch, but PC was talking to the media Weds AM.

Unless he spoke to them first thing for only an hour or so and got on the training pitch mid morning.. feasible I guess.

But yes, I will take the OP with a rather large pinch of salt!

Cook on Radio Suffolk last night said it was 'sports science advice', but after double sessions Mon/Tues they were not up to it, the intensity, on Wednesday. he did sound dissapointed, couldn't even put a 'scouse humour' spin on it. I think he knows already who's in/out this summer.
