In better news.. 06:56 - Apr 3 with 3549 views | The_Romford_Blue | The ‘race for 6th’ has opened up now. Lincoln and Doncaster have totally free falled. It’s no longer just 6th available. All of 4th, 5th and 6th playoff places are still up for grabs. Gives us a couple of other teams to hunt down. Looks to be any of 8 or 9 teams going for the last 3 places. With a lot of this steaks having to play each other yet, and us having easy enough fixtures in comparison, I think we should stop fancy a playoff spot if Cook can grind out the results. In better news.. on 09:35 - Apr 3 by Chrisd | Yes, let’s wait and see. It would be foolish to dismiss MK Dons when they are on a better run of form than us currently, but when you’ve been watching football as long as I have you can see the signs of a team that looks like a promotion chasing one, we just look like we’re going through the motions and need putting out of our misery instead of gaining any momentum. I'm not dismissing MK Dons, but at home that should be a winnable game for us. Their recent good run has mainly been based on their home form, they got turned over 3-0 at Wigan a few games ago. You seem to talk us down and talk everyone else up. If we're quite as poor as you think we are and these other sides are as good as you think they are, why are we only 2 points off 6th and only 4 points off 4th? Why are we sat amongst a number of sides who you think are much better than us?

We look pretty poor and have done most of the season. But you don't need to be a Formula 1 car to win a banger race.

I didn’t say they were good, those are your words, but certainly better sides than us currently and in superior form and taking more points from recent games. We’re just not a very good side and haven’t been for some time, we’ve still got too many parts that are dysfunctional. So no, I’ve got little faith that we’ll get the job done and that’s more a reflection of us than the opposition, but if you think differently I tip my hat to your optimism. And yet these sides who you think are certainly better than us are only a couple of points ahead of us, despite how poor we've been.

The problem is.... on 10:16 - Apr 3 with 570 views | unstableblue | .... the top 7 sides in the 6 game form table are in that top six mix...with Blackpool and Pompey looking to have got a recent lift from new managers and coming bang into form I think Sunderland/Hull are going to be strong right till the end. We have to out in a performance Monday, a win and some proper control of the game. MK Dons will be a different ball game a week today. Downes return could have a major impact, as Cook sees him as a starter. If he can stay fit. Free Dozzell up a bit, get some form out of Edwards and Norwood... who knows.

I think Downes’ return is vital though, after the experiences with Vincent-Young and Skuse, rushing him back would be the worst thing to do. Our best performance under Cook has been the first 20 minutes against Plymouth when Downes, Dozzell and Bishop started to become comfortable with their defined roles. Yes, we dropped off for ten minutes but we’re just building a head of steam again when Downes went off. I suppose we have shown we can perform without him, such as the first half against Portsmouth and the first 15 (I’ll be more generous than Cook) yesterday but without any consistency and we are very low of confidence - as soon as we concede we shatter. Maybe managing to hold on yesterday will help with that though more likely we’ll revert to type soon enough.

So Cook will only need to get us to average to get us right in the mix, given we're only 2 points away whilst being poor. Hopefully he's capable of that.

78/80 points isn’t to be needed for 6th place. In last 5/6/7 years it’s never been that high 74/75 required IMO

Yes, but what’s the difference between us and those above us? They have a regular goal scorer/goal scorers. Hull - Wilks (20) and Magennis (13) Peterborough - Clarke-Harris (26), Szmodics (12) Sunderland - Wyke (22) Lincoln - Grant (13), Scully (10) Portsmouth - Marquis (15) Blackpool - Yates (18) Charlton - Aneke (13), Washington (11) Gillingham - Oliver (16), Graham (11) Compared to us who do not have anyone in double figures, Norwood being the highest scorer with seven. Between the boxes I don’t think there’s much difference between us and the other sides in the play off picture; our failure to convert is killing us.

We don't create chances, I don't think converting is the issue as much as creating is.

Can’t dispute any of that Point of Blue, but we really aren’t creating many opportunities full-stop and there lies another concern and that’s not just on the strikers.

We don't create anywhere near enough chances, that's our big problem.

We're slightly out-performing our expected goals, so I'm not sure "chance conversion" is the problem.

True, I just checked our xG and we’re eighteenth on 1.13 which is startling though Lincoln are only two places above us on 1.29 yet have scored fourteen goals more than us. Charlton are in 14th on 1.32, scoring 55. If you calculate the number of expected goals by number of matches: Charlton: 1.32 x 38 = 50.16 (actually scored 55) Lincoln: 1.29 x 37 = 47.73 (actually scored 55) Ipswich: 1.13 x 37 = 41.82 (actually scored 41) We’re just below average in terms of conversion whilst Charlton and Lincoln both are clearly above - whilst creating is definitely an issue concerting is also a problem.

In better news.. on 07:32 - Apr 3 by blueprint | We had an “easy” game yesterday and only just scraped through. Even if we sneak into the playoffs I just don’t see us having enough bite and character to see us going all the way. |
You need to look at the other teams above us. Pretty much all have dropped points against ‘lesser’ unfancied L1 sides. You make it sound like it’s only us. For example, Hull, for all their firepower couldn’t even beat a very poor Shrewsbury side. Do we mention Posh’s 3-3 draw against Rochdale or their defeat to Burton?

Why so sad Wallers? You loved us limping to unconvincing wins when Lambert was in charge!
