Watching this excuse for a footballer again and again 21:15 - Apr 24 with 9523 viewsCheltenham_Blue

Its pretty clear that this was meant to be a FK routine that had been practiced on the training pitch.
Looks to me as though it should have been pinged into around the penalty spot, for Ward to run on to.

If you look, Skuse is pretty angry about it and points at the space in front of Wards run. Ward reacts to it too.

My initial thought when watching this was why have we only got one player in the box? Clearly the iFollow angle does not allow you to see what is coming on from outside/the edge of the box. However, the idea there is any plan or worked set piece is part of the problem. We do not appear to have anything. We are a bunch of disjointed individuals doing our own thing drifting aimlessly.

I trust that amongst the coaching changes we have a tactical coach lined up.

As for Edwards taking set pieces on that showing, we may as well put Bennetts on them!

It would be good to see Dozzell or Bishop developing the ability to take them as they might be here next season.

We'd be better off having Liz Edwards on them.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Soooo cringe that some of our fans genuinely think this was done on purpose.

Jesus wept have a word with yourselves, you're supposed to be grown men. Itd be funny if it wasn't so desperately sad whilst being equally concerning in terms of the future of the human race.

I expect you'll find a way of blaming this on Cook.

No, although now you mention it the lack of players in the box for the set piece routine perhaps gives an insight into Cooks philosophy so far and it certainly isn't an attacking one.

From his body language to where he took it from to where it went it certainly looks deliberate.

If it’s not it was incompetence beyond. Roll on the end of the season.

He's trying to loop/bend that in the top far corner. It is a piece of, shall we say, individualism rather than team play at a time when people are trying to find new contracts.

Somebody on the coaching staff must have had the brilliant idea of putting Edwards on set piece duty.

Possibly but after the mess he made of the corner why not have someone else take the free kick?

I didn't watch the game. But I've seen players take several bad set pieces before they're taken off them, it's not unusual to give people another go.

Yes, it is not worth debating too much but it was an experiment that failed miserably.

Of course, although as I think you've said since it's quite a small point.

I do think Cook criticising the players for lack of confidence, not scoring, not creating etc lacks a little credibility when your set-piece routines has such little presence in the opposition box. The great thing about set pieces and numbers in the box is you can score a goal 'out of nothing' and really build confidence.

Because of this post, I have looked at it again, and as he hits it, there are six people running at the goal, how do you come up with only one in the box?.

Yep definitely six in the box and one just outside it. Perhaps if Cornell had come up in his green shirt Haynes might have noticed him.

So 6 players isn't enough for you in the box attacking a set piece? How many would be acceptable as 'attacking intent' seeing as you're claiming this proves Cook doesn't have any?

I thought we were allowed to just say what we wanted without needing any proof. Y'know, like how all our players suddenly don't care under Cook so none of it is his fault, right?

Funny how in the Cornell video thread they all seem pretty passionate about the save and vocal about it too.

Maybe it's the lack of tactical set-piece routine that's the problem because 3 of the 6 players arrive really late for a ball that's coming in from the edge of the area, they're only ever going to be involved in second balls. Perhaps Cook could work on some set-piece routines in training, that might help. Or, at least do something positive.

What is quite annoying is had he put the ball where it clearly should have gone. The off the ball running for the set piece was very good and I think ward would have scored there.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

No, it has been explained to us that nothing is Paul Cook's fault, it is all the players fault. Just like it is all the players fault that we were on the fringes of the playoffs when Paul Cook arrived.

I imagine our new owners are saying to themselves 'that guy Lambert must have been a good manager having those players that high in the league'.

From what I can see, the set up was that Edwards pulls the ball back to Ward who either has a shot (as the ball will be on his left foot) and the runners coming in are there to pick up any blocked shots - or - Ward chips the ball to the back post where the players are running in - looks like a good multi-option free kick to me....
