Cash only establishments 19:01 - May 2 with 5665 views | gtsb1966 | Saw a few of these in the Costa del Clacton today. Chip shop, cafe and gift shop i went in all said cash only. How are places able to do this especially in covid times and why are the government not stamping on it. It's obvious it's for one reason.

Cash only establishments on 00:18 - May 3 with 2964 views | Ryorry | If it were the only shop within miles you might have a point re customers being allowed a choice, but on "Costa del Clacton" I'm guessing there are other shops around which accept cards? Edit: missed that you said there were other such shops around in your first sentence, doh, sorry! [Post edited 3 May 2021 10:15]

Cashless society. No tips on cards as a rule. My card reader takes about 2% of each fare. Also the firm I work for(but don't) as I'm self employed take 5% of any card payments which comes off my weekly rental. [Post edited 3 May 2021 0:57]

Cash only establishments on 10:06 - May 3 with 2752 views | dickie | I like cash, I'm not keen on there being a digital record of my every purchase so that companies can track my preferences and habits and therefore target me with ads. Also, i find budgeting much easier with cash - when I've been at my poorest in life budgeting with envelopes of small cash sums (for fuel, food, miscellaneous etc) has got me through. It's all too easy to chuck purchases on an ever expanding overdraft otherwise. I think a cashless society will harm the poorest in society [Post edited 3 May 2021 12:18]

I'd have agreed with you 14 months ago, but the advantages of having a contactless option in times of pandemic are clear.

Fair enough. You must understand the risks though of money laundering, modern slavery and tax evasion that can come along with cash though.

Hasn't the whole, "the virus can be transmitted on surfaces" been over done though? Surely the risk of catching it from contaminated cash is minute.

The chances of picking up a virus or disease from cash is so small it is not worth worrying about. If you are worried about a company evading paying tax, get a receipt from them. They will then have an obligation to declare it. I recently used a company to do some work and they asked for cash...which is more than fine. However I had to fight for the receipt to be emailed through and it took them ten days to do so. They clearly wanted to avoid sending it if possible. Many Governments would love cashless societies as the control it gives them over the people is total. Look at China. Cash has to be kept as an option even if it only makes up 10% of transactions in the future.

According to this it's uncommon, but not ruled out. There are many people with compromised immune systems for whom even 2 vaccs will give sub-optimal protection, anything up to 10 x less than normal response, so it's still an important consideration. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00251-4 [Post edited 3 May 2021 12:22]

My dad regularly lifted me up for a ‘single click’ on the turnstile in the North. Not sure what he slid the operator though.

Cash only establishments on 12:49 - May 3 with 2546 views | J2BLUE | I just googled it and apparently 40% of transactions are made using cash which I find incredible. Cash definitely has a place. Hopefully forever. I can't remember the last time I used cash but I always carry a tenner in my phone case. Obviously with more and more smart devices cash is going to be used less and less as the years go by but I would like to retain the option.

It's much lower than that. It was 23% in 2019. So I imagine it will be 10% or less for 2020 due to covid. I'm not sure why some people are so emotive about this topic. Card has safeguards to give enhanced consumer protection, protect against fraud and by proxy money laundering, tax evasion and modern slavery/people trafficking. Cash is dieing because people don't want it as payment, people don't want to use it, merchants don't want it and banks don't want you to bring it in. As you say it's a nice back up but its use is more theorotical than existential. Most people I know are evolving beyond cards now and just carry their phones with Google pay etc. [Post edited 3 May 2021 13:07]

Yes I misread it. It's actually 40% of in person transactions and it's for America from 2017 https://fortunly.com/statistics/cash-versus-credit-card-spending-statistics/#gre

Having the option is a good thing, though before we all get sidetracked, the OP was not about not having the option for cash, but completely the opposite.

I would imagine it costs them as much in sales as any potential benefit from not declaring sales. The OP isn't being fair to the shops.
