Will be a quite a shock to parents on, say, Christchurch Street when the school catchment changes their upcoming child’s school from Northgate to the town centre

It's only a primary school

None of the comments have actually said why they object though. It's just woolly nonsense on various subjects, none of which seem to be to do with the actual building of a school.

As for the rooftop playground, that isn't uncommon in London and I suspect New York as well.

Not living in the town perhaps there is something I've missed but more schools with good quality resources is surely a good thing.

Incredibly common here Stokie. It's just a matter of what you are used to. Maybe people are imagining some tiny space, but individual schools here cater to thousands of kids at any given time, the buildings are massive, and the roof top outdoor space correspondingly so.

Brooklyn Technical Highschool has nearly 6,000 students! The building covers half a block and has an indoor running track and swimming pool. These aren't dirty prison yards we are talking about here, quite often they're pretty bloody nice

I suspect it'll be incredibly common for places like this to exist (on a smaller scale) in Ipswich over the years to come as the population is only going to keep increasing, but the boundaries of the town will remain the same.

You say that but would they be happy? They've been at it for years. Dumping their housing developments on the fringe of Ipswich but providing few little in the way of services, shifting the responsibility for that onto the population of Ipswich.

Thorrington Park - where are the schools?
Pinewood - where are the schools?

Either way, any school built on the fringe of Ipswich isn't much use for the people living in the town centre of Ipswich.

You seem to be agreeing with me that they do want to develop on the Ipswich Fringe and have been for years. It is part of their planning strategy.

I agree that they have been poor at providing the infrastructure to go with it, but planning guidelines are getting stricter on that nowadays, not least because they charge developers a community infrastructure levy to help build it.

Not of public services.....why fund them when they can just put the burden on to Ipswich to do so!

Agreed.

But Ipswich Fringe is where they want to stick their housing and they do have an obligation to provide the services that go with it.

I agree that they want to develop on the fringes of Ipswich, but those developments have been housing estates without public services and amenities. It'll be interesting to see if what you say about planning guidelines changes the situation. Do you know if they are guidelines, or actual rules written into law?

Ipswich is getting hemmed in, if the population keeps growing I don't see what else there is to do other than build taller, build for multi-use, and set up services in areas where we wouldn't traditionally expect to see them.

Although I don't want to defend Babergh and their planning policy because i don't like how they and other councils do dump housing on the Ipswich Fringe and leave Ipswich to pick up the services, it would only be fair to point out that Suffolk One has been built in Pinewood so it is not entirely school free.

That's a fair point. Although I suspect Sprites, Aster Road, Gusford and Chantry High might ask who is educating the kids in that area until the get to 16 years old!

Some of the comments are amazing.

IpswichGal says "look how well putting no student parking at Suffolk One worked out". How many 11 years olds is she expecting to drive to school?

Unsurprising to see IBC getting the blame when schools are a DfE/county council matter.

Further to that the former Toys'R'Us and MotherCare stores at Copdock Mill Interchange were under consideration as a location for a school, and may still be.

You won't find many schools in London with huge playing fields though and I suspect most playgrounds are smaller than what that proposal is showing.

As you say though, the situation in places like London and Ipswich is different so there can be different solutions. The question is would anyone approve of a large school being built on the outskirts of Ipswich? What about the people needing a school locally living near the town centre? What should be done with the massive hulking department stores that are all now closed?

Lots of questions and possibly not many answers at the moment. I think a lot of town centres are now in limbo nationally without much of a clue with what to do with all the buildings there.

"What about the people needing a school locally living near the town centre?"

Yasmin's primary school is but a 2 minute walk from this proposal, so there is a school with 3-form entry in the locality, which isn't necessarily the case for the new developments such as the one off Hadleigh Road, or has new schooling provision been put in place for those?

I assumed the new school was a provision for the evitable conversion of some of the town centre into flats (which will happen everywhere, it's not an Ipswich centric issue).

This has been on agenda for a few years. I knew a few people working on this when it was first proposed and think the idea is that with new accommodation coming into the town Centre, plus think St Helens and St Matthew’s both being over subscribed (or they were at the time) that there is a need for another good quality primary in the area. I hope that comments implying that a new school should be build on the edge of the town were tongue in cheek - I won’t even bother to bite on that idea!

I would imagine slum type rentals for all those cleaners, gardeners and nannies who can't afford to live in the sticks now that North London wants to live the good life!
