Countries that Don't Exist 10:52 - May 27 with 4782 views | Kropotkin123 | Keno's post also got me thinking about countries that don't exist that could have been really powerful if they existed today. What do you think would be the most interesting country in terms of changing the political landscape today? Guidelines are... Try and pick countries that existed for a bit of time of have some cultural ties, as opposed to winning and load of wars and imploding soon after. So yes to the Polish-lithuanian commonwealth but no to nazi Germany. I'm going for Lotharingia, as it incorporates the "European corridor" that encompasses many of the most profitable cities in Europe.

Countries that Don't Exist on 10:44 - May 28 by Ryorry | One I keep meaning to get round to. The older I get & the longer the pandemic drags on though, the less able I feel to face escapism of the "challenging" kind - reality seems bad enough! |
Fatherland is one of the best books I have ever read. Even beyond The Odessa File. I re-read it a couple of years back in a single sitting. Perhaps a valid criticism is that it requires some knowledge of Germany and its culture to really appreciate it.

No, that's more of a union. I'm already being lenient with the inclusion of empires. But unions are a bit too far as there are multiple states.

Countries that Don't Exist on 08:41 - Jun 3 with 490 views | Tangledupin_Blue | I will mention the Mali Empire. There is a present-day Mali but it is just a small part of the old empire which, at its greatest, spanned most of present day Mali, much of Mauritania and several of the smaller coastal states. The empire lasted from the thirteenth century to the seventeenth before a steady decline to its current size. Its population probably exceeded 20 million. In its day it was second only to the Mongol Empire in terms of size and influence. Through trade it became hugely wealthy. It was gold-rich and traded salt and ivory and slaves. At one time its leader, Mansa Musa, was worth what would now be the equivalent of $400 billion. [Post edited 3 Jun 2021 8:45]

Countries that Don't Exist on 08:53 - Jun 3 with 478 views | DanTheMan | I don't think this realistically could have happened at the time due to how inheritance happened but imagine if Francia at it's greatest extent managed to hang around. Obviously you've already mentioned Lotharingia, but in some alternate universe where Charlemagne manages to have a single (and decent) heir, they would have been quite the powerhouse.

It shouldn't be forgotten that the only time that the United States and Canada have gone to war so far it was the Canadians who effectively won and caused the United States to withdraw: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lundy%27s_Lane

There was a good podcast on the Mali Empire I mentioned earlier in the thread you might like. They were big slave traders though. SB
