Morecambe

Have visited both in the last few seasons.

Newport is quite a quirky ground, you walk through the adjacent rugby club to get into the main stand. Away end is open terracing, and there is no stand behind the opposite goal, which backs onto the Rugby pitch. The very old stand opposite the modern main stand may not be in use either. Newport town centre was ok and the ground a 10 minute walk away.

Morecambe is a more modern stadium, three sided, terracing either end of the main stand. Away fans were in the main stand when I was there. The side opposite the main stand comprised a wall and a few out buildings. Morecambe wins for being Morecambe, seaside, fish and chips and Eric Morecambe. It was also the last of the then top four division 92 grounds that I visited.

Newport, as it'll be my nearest away trip from uni. Although I'm sure if they come up then we'll get them first game of the season when it's reduced capacity and I won't be able to get a ticket.

Morecambe. Good friend of mine plays for them and they’ve had some season under Derek Adams, I would love to see them go one step further. His managerial CV is quite impressive to be fair, he sets very high standards and has high expectations. Compete contrast to Jim Bentley who was very much a people person, very pally with the players. DA has come in and some haven’t liked it, they’ve moved on, but he’s definitely achieved results with the players he’s got there through a bit of tough love.

Also after the way Kev Ellison celebrated in front of him recently I would love to see Adams have the last laugh tomorrow, given it’s against Newport. My friends version of events is quite different, he’s good pals with Kev and still says he was completely out of order.

Newport as it's a local game.

Horrible ground though, not sure how we'd cope on a rainy Tuesday night in November.

Its a win win situation for me. Morecambe is literally 2 miles from my house and Newport County are my last weekend bet for 100 pounds if they win.

I remember a story from a fair few years back that said that Morecambe were the 'least hated' team in the country - it took a bit of hunting but I assume this is the article that formed the basis of that: https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/3584050.burnley-fans-hit-back-hated-

I'd have liked to have seen Forest Green get to the final but out of the two options I'll go for Newport - much easier away day for me and their ground has a strange appeal to me.

I think Adams should be given the manager of the season award. He's done an amazing job with Morecambe who have consistently been amongst the favourites for relegation to the National League. Their league finishes for the previous ten seasons have been 20th, 15th, 16th, 18th, 11th, 21st, 18th, 22nd, 18th and 22nd. They would have been relegated to the National League last season had it not been for Bury going bust and Macclesfield having 17 points deducted.

To have them one match away from promotion (both in the regular season and now in the play-offs) is an unbelieveable job and one of the best turnarounds of a club that I can remember.

Yeah, I completely agree. I actually don’t think those league positions were underperforming either, staying up under Jim Bentley was success, their financial position was perilous and they cobbled together a side in all honesty. At one stage they didn’t have access to a gym or practice pitch, so the players had to buy their own PureGym memberships. Adams has completely taken them from relegation fodder to potentially L1, its remarkable. He’s a really tough nut apparently, in on a Sunday if they lose etc, and really does ask a lot, but the players have really responded to it. The likes of Stockton and Mendes Gomes are looking better players than they ever have before.

Totally agree he’s the manager of the season in L2. As I said, when you look at his managerial CV today it’s quite remarkable the jobs he’s done at Ross County and Plymouth before Morecambe. There’s barely a blot on his copy book. Based on what I’ve heard about him from my friend (who has played under a lot of managers), there was a part of me that quite fancied him here after Lambert if we were looking for a bit of an outside bet.

Never mind about that, Wycombe and Oxford good for me, even though I got soaked when we played Oxford and it took half an hour to get out of the car park!
Still remember there centre half just pushing one of our forwards over on the penalty area and the ref not giving it because he thought the attacker might have fouled previously.

Decided to start watching this with about half an hour to go. These are crap, depressing we'll be in the same league as one of them next season. Morecambe seem to have been playing for penalties since I tuned in.

Looks like Morecambe have pinched it with a dive. Both teams have looked awful. The lad who scored the penalty (Mendes Gomes) looks decent, but that’s about it.

Penalty decision was a disgrace. Think it’s been a very poor match.

It was ridiculous. Not a foul for me and even if it's deemed a foul then the incident took place outside the box. Both sh!te, Newport marginally less so on the balance of play.

Was praying for Kevin Ellison to get his 42 year old head on something after that decision. Diabolical refereeing.

That’s what £20k a week wage budget gets you, yet they’re still in the same league as us. I think they’ll take a dicking next season.

Isn’t Adams off to Bradford? Sure I read he was going there regardless or whether he took Morecambe up or not.
