I just hope I am not going to be abused for not wearing one. I can barely breathe with one on, and do have an exemption lanyard - but cannot really prove I am exempt as doctors will not give you a letter or anything to state why. I think it's my time to go now - no more football, days out, pubs - the things that I have sacrificed a year and a quarter which made my life worth living - as my anxiety will be so bad and expecting to get abuse (verbal and physical) will be too much to bear. The mixed messages over what to do have caused me to be suicidal and facing abuse every time I dare try to get my life back is just too much. I am not going to tolerate being called "selfish" because I have physical and mental health problems. It should be a choice. I have had my 2 vaccines and feel it's been all for nothing if I can no longer be free or enjoy life.

He's just said that on Marr as well.

Ridiculous mixed messages from the government. Other ministers saying totally the opposite thing.

He was on straight after the modeller who said we could see 2000 hospitalisations a day, let's hope that's a very worst case scenario.

i think it is going to get worse. in my small town i hadn't heard of any cases in the past year. now one pub has closed for a deep clean plus 2 shops. also in the last week the local facebook page according to my wife several people in the town have now got it.
if this does happen guess who will get the blame, joe public

Hang on in there. You won't get abuse especially if you are wearing your lanyard. As soon as the government say masks are no longer needed I would hazard a guess that most of the population will not wear one so you won't look out of place at all. There is light at the end of the tunnel now so keep going.

Thank you - but I cannot see most people being as understanding as you or some on here are. And the fact that damned lanyard is green and yellow... I will see how things go but as soon as I get abuse, I will cancel my ticket sadly. Get a season;s pass for IFollow or something. I have missed football and going so much. I wish my husband could come with me, but the lack of tickets in SBR stand is going to make it nigh on impossible.

Hi debsy,

please do not fear abuse going out without a mask. I am exempt and I too was very worried the first few times I went out with my lanyard but I have to say the VAST majority of people are understanding and do not make a judgement. As long as you are still being sensible, social distancing etc. you have as much right as everybody else to go out and enjoy your life.

After the 19th there will be a lot of people not wearing masks and not wearing lanyards either as they are not exempt, by wearing a lanyard you are putting the message out that you do respect wearing a mask and would be wearing one if you could.

You take care x

Most of the rest of the world is unvaccinated, so endless mutation is probably inevitable.

I am hoping that with each mutation the virus might become less deadly. Isn’t there some thing about viruses evolving to become more transmissible, but less deadly because they don’t want to finish off their host!?

That's very considerate of them. If only humans could have the same level of foresight and consideration for those we depend on but care nothing for!

Government policy is dictated simply by the opinion polls. They have become the ultimate in populist Governments doing whatever will get them elected regardless of the cost to the nation.

Therefore, their policy is very much "we have done all we can, freedom day is here, but you have responsibility for if you exercise your freedom and it does go the way the experts are predicting." The more mixed the message, the more they can cry out "who could have predicted we would be here? We did all we could!" The one lesson of history is that we do not learn the lessons of history.

Thank you Lightworker - it's nice to hear from someone who also wears a lanyard. I do distance myself from people and use the hand gel/wash my hands regularly. I think because I have such extreme anxiety problems, it could be that, typical of that affliction, that my mind builds up scenarios that are the worst that could happen. I hope that is that case that people will be understanding. I got abuse at the start from some old woman in Superdrug, and I explained that I had invisible illnesses and she would not stop shouting at me, and I just crumpled in that shop and could not stop crying and shaking, and the staff were really concerned about me. This was just in a shop, but how I will cope in a crowded stadium for football (or for the few concerts I have coming up) will be a real test for me. I have barely been out since March 2020 - only last week did I muster up the courage to visit my parents to have dinner at theirs, I had missed them so much, but we hugged as we are all fully vaccinated. I am ok in small settings like this, and hairdressers (who are fine with me not able to wear one and the place is ventilated well).

Not once did I go for a meal, the pub, days out - the only shops I go to in town once a week all know me as I make myself known to the doormen there why I cannot wear one. I want to expand the shops I visit, like clothes/charity shops as have really missed going to them.

Not all people who don;t wear a mask are selfish and could not care less - you and I are proof of this.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.

My regular haunt in Ipswich is doing the same. Simply, they don't want their staff out at risk by facing punters at the bar. Brave decision, as it will cost them money, but I applaud it, and will make sure they get my beer spend.

There is the more realistic thought that employers have a duty of care - hence the smoking ban.

A cursory glance at The 2007 Corporate Manslaughter Act might give a pointer - and an understanding of why protective measures taken by companies are usually not merely acts of benevolence.

Unfortunately, many of these various measures have set off the Mail and Express into furthers fits hysteria, shrieking about political correctness, health and safety, nanny state, four legs good....baa baa - always with enough misrepresentation to have their readers rolling around the floor biting the carpet.

Whereas in the real world we now have "s1(3) of the Act provides that ‘An organisation is guilty… only if the way in which its activities are managed or organised by its senior management is a substantial element in the breach.’

ie in laymans terms, senior management (individuals) can now be held personally responsible. Hence the tightening up and enforcement of regulation.

Sadly none of this is ever explained, as both rags know their bigoted readers want scapegoats (jews, blacks, foreigners etc) for their own sad failings and inadequacies.

The problem as I see it is; if we're told mask wearing is advised but down to the individuals common sense, the people who choose not to wear a mask are exactly those who SHOULD wear a mask. I would've thought they're far more likely to be the ones not following other guidelines, be unvaccinated etc.
