Are supermarkets really running out of food? on 14:09 - Jul 22 by The_Flashing_Smile | You jest (at least I hope you do) but I remember several on here during lockdown one admitting to bulk buying loo rolls when it wasn't necessary (and subsequently proved so). |
By proved unnecessary, are you talking about the very first lockdown when loo rolls became like gold dust for a period of about 4 weeks?

Depends where you were I guess. Supplies got low here but we were never in danger of not getting any. And the low supplies were caused by the panic buying - a self-fulfilling prophecy. I resolved not to be a sheep and panic buy - and was fine.

It’s almost like every area of the country isn’t London and doesn’t have 7,645,368 shops In fairness toilet rolls just about sorted themselves out around Ipswich, nappies were the biggest issue

Are supermarkets really running out of food? on 13:20 - Jul 22 by ElderGrizzly | No. They simply don't have the staff to fill shelves in some locations due to the self-isolation issue. Of course, the media showing empty shelves will prompt people to panic and create more of an issue. |
Perhaps we could ask people from Europe to come over and help out with our staff shortages ..... oh......

No frozen blueberries today in Waitrose, so they were substituted in my click & collect order for frozen mixed berries. The latter are £1.75 dearer, but one gets charged the lower price.

Whilst some people obviously enjoy baking, flour is hardly on most families' routine weekly shopping list is it? If that's running out, it suggests some people *are* panicking & stocking up on what they see as "just in case of apocolypse" products. [Post edited 22 Jul 2021 16:58]

That was a massive pain 16 months ago. It seemed to take much longer than any other product to come back into stock as well.

That's a little odd - we have good amounts of flour available.

If it's of any help, we have the sandwich slices cucumbers and the sweet and sour cucumbers in stock. If you still cannot locate a supply nearer to the 1st league game, please feel free to drop me a DM and I'll bring some to the game for you

Are supermarkets really running out of food? on 14:37 - Jul 22 by Ryorry | There are certainly some serious shortages of medical supplies, but that's been the case for months. My regular tablets for gut problem, which have to be uncoated due to allergies, have been very hard for the chemist to source. One of the essential ingredients to make supportive moulds for toes as protection against corns, comes exclusively from Germany, and my local NHS podiatry services haven't been able to get hold of any for 6 months. This probably sounds quite funny to anyone who's never had corns & spends most of the time on their feet ... |
Yes, I suppose the more specialised any particular product or ingredient is then the more fragile that supply chain is likely to be.

Yes - by coincidence I'd placed a Sains order earlier this a.m., so out of curiosity, just been back onto their page to have a look. A quick search showed 30 bread flours, 16 plain flours, 9 self-raising flours & 6 gluten-free flours, all available! in sizes ranging from 500g-1.5Kg bags - a mix of ordinary, organic, specialist pasta mix etc etc. North Yorkshire.

I didn't have to travel to different shops though, I just did my normal shop. I appreciate rural places with one shop must've struggled, but that's a small proportion of the whole country. And I reiterate, it wouldn't have happened if people stayed calm and weren't so selfish.

Yes but that’s because London has millions of shops, so gets the most supplies etc And I’m not talking about places with one shop, supermarkets had a huge shortage on several products for a month whereby going 2 hours after opening meant empty shelves across aisles such as TP, pasta, baking, nappies etc, and only being able to get them if you went in just as they stocked the shelves Unsurprisingly it might be worth thinking outside of your cosy London bubble for a change Also whilst I agree with your last paragraph it’s also irrelevant; if others are panic buying and there ends up in a shortage people don’t really have an option but to look out for themselves (the very small minority stockpiling 6 months worth of supplies excluded obvs)

The issue then was actually with the production of the bags. Some supermarkets ended up packaging it in all sorts of random bags instead.

London bubble is such a w@nky expression. Reeks of jealousy. Anyways, that aside, the panic buying of March 2020 was predominately people doubling up rather than racking up goods.

Nah, I love London. Dollers just often forgets that just because something is true of London doesn’t necessarily mean the rest of the country is the same Yeah, think there’s some truth in that - or if not doubling up, taking the opportunity to grab things when they were there when they wouldn’t usually have been on the shopping list. Which is my point largely, that sort of ‘panic buying’ was proven to be justified as there were shortages
