Our treatment of Jacobs a disgrace … on 22:59 - Aug 9 by itfcjoe | I don’t think the sports science bods were particularly enamoured with Jacobs from the start which is why it took so long to get here, but he got through a very thorough medical…..so he really got let up the garden path by us. I think they thought Edwards deal was dead, and when he became available they just went after him without regard for Jacobs. Sort of thing happens a lot but he’s been royally screwed |
It’s unfortunate on a human level and we can all sympathise with Jacobs. But it’s football. It’s business. Until the contract is signed anything can happen. Ian Crook posed with an Ipswich shirt and decided against the move. We have had people like Austin and McCormack here that have changed their minds in the car or been offered a better deal or who we have turned down because Keane didn’t like their little handbag sized dog. Players fail medicals. Players get better offers at the last minute. It all goes on. I feel sorry for Jacobs but you can guarantee that Portsmouth would have accepted a much better transfer offer late in the day or Jacobs a much better contract offer. We’ve simply signed what we think is a much better player that we didn’t think we could get, at the 11th hour. It’s a tough one to take for the guy and I can emphasise but we’ve done what any properly run football club or business should do which is what is best for us. It’s great to have manners and etiquette and sentiment where we can. But not when it means potentially spending more money to sign what we deem an inferior player because we feel bad for them.
Our treatment of Jacobs a disgrace … on 08:34 - Aug 10 with 982 views | JDB23 | At the end of the day he’s still going to be playing football in the same league as us earning thousands a week, hard to feel too sorry for him. Sounds like Cowley rates him highly and said in his interview what an absolute professional he has been so can’t have burnt too many bridges.

But to be fair to Jacobs you don't know if he would have accepted a better offer by default it's just as likely he would have said no and Ipswich made the first offer I will honour that. It's like when you sell a house, you get an offer at the asking price and you accept it the buyer starts to spend money on legal fees etc and then someone offers you more. Some sellers are stupid enough to continue with the first buyer, they say it's the honourable thing to do, others like me will say f**k it I'll take the bigger offer who cares about the first buyer. Basically Town have done the latter. They sold a dream to Jacobs and then shafted him. I'm all for it I would much prefer to be a club that's hated by all aka Millwall style than be a family friendly club as some want.

I’d prefer to be a club that’s successful and family friendly - but sometimes teams do need to get their elbows out when the going gets tough.

Our treatment of Jacobs a disgrace … on 08:54 - Aug 10 with 892 views | TomTheWriter | This situation would be a lot worse than it is if Jacobs was a free agent like Edwards, but he isn’t and is going back to a club as first choice and their highest earner. There are a few things quite shocking on Pompey’s end as well. 1. Cowley spoke over the weekend about how he needed Jacobs gone to pay for Morrell and Thompson. Lines such as ‘he’s our highest earner’, ‘the money can help the club in a big way’, Cowley openly kicked Jacobs out the door so he could sign the two players, but is then welcoming the boy back to the club, while simultaneously signing Morrell. They obviously didn’t need to sell Jacobs to buy two players, Cowley clearly didn’t want him and sold him the story of ‘well one out means two in’. Now Cowley plays the victim and tries to get back on his side, despite kicking him to the curb to begin with. 2. I didn’t see a single tweet last night from a Pompey fan thanking us for not signing Michael Jacobs in the end. They were calling Cook ‘disgraceful’, ‘snake’, and all kinds of rude names under the sun. No ‘YES! Jacobs stays!’ ‘Thank god that has fallen through’. Portsmouth fans are angry at us for giving them there player back, not stopping them buying someone who was already in the door. If I’m Jacobs’ I’ve got no interest in being back at Portsmouth because the manager is willing to sell, and the fans hate the fact he has returned to the club. Really hard situation for Jacobs to be in, think the majority of Portsmouth have acted disrespectful towards Jacobs’ these last few days as well. Not sure he feels welcomed there anymore. Hopefully he gets a move to a club that treats him better. For us, if your 4th choice winger is having a medical but your 1st choice comes available, it’s pretty obvious. There is no gentleman’s agreement here because it makes us a poorer side not getting the no.1 target.

"sold a dream to Jacobs" He's not a child. He's well into his career and knows how football works. He's also still got a job. I'd question the idea that a contract with us is anyone's dream apart from a handful - including Bonne.

Our treatment of Jacobs a disgrace … on 21:59 - Aug 9 by J2BLUE | I feel for Jacobs but if he had a Championship offer while he was here would he have signed? Of course not. It happened with Charlie Austin. I hold no grudge with Austin. He got offered a better deal, good for him. It's not nice but it's what happens. The same could yet happen to us with Morrell. |
You are joking. That's funny as

I get what you're saying but I don't think he's been led up the garden path. We did intend to sign him... then we got a better option.

Yeah this would never have happened under the old regime. We'd be stuck with the lesser player... (or rather we wouldn't have been in for either, we'd be getting someone on loan no-one else wants).

I am still wandering if we had made our mind up on Jacobs. Just find it strange we hadnt spoke to him to cancel the move... but cowley felt he had a right to. What if PC and MA were still discussing it.?
