Our treatment of Jacobs a disgrace … 21:56 - Aug 9 with 8333 viewsKieran_Knows

… according to local Pompey journo. More tomorrow - although probably not much more than what we already know.

Think the issue is we’ve been chasing him for weeks, Cook has wanted him and Ashton hasn’t really due to the injury situations…..but Jacobs has been pushing and pushing Pompey to get out (presumably at our request) and now he’s got it done its fallen through at the last minute.

He now has to go back there after agitating for a move all summer - more will come out id guess, but it’s exceptionally ruthless

Weve had players having medicals this summer and still not sign... dont see the club moaning about them and our journos calling them a disgrace.

Sounds like the first real clash between Cook and Ashton over targets, which was always going to happen eventually. I wonder if Ashton had to find someone with greater promise in order to sway Cook away from Jacobs?

Plenty of snippy comments about Bournemouth in recent years.

Again is that primarily money orientated? Perhaps partially but there’s definitely other factors to disliking bournemouth in recent years.

Eddie Howe for example p*ssed many of us off in the playoff year by slagging off our team for being too physical apparently during the 2-2 at their place. Came across as a right little bitter tosspot that day and I hoped him and bournemouth would fail from then on.

Obviously that’s just one example of someone disliking them for reasons other than money but you see my point I’m sure.

We don’t know the full context and likely never to hear the Town side of things. On the surface it’s not a good look but if Jacobs was offered another 1k a week to go to another club what would he do?
At the end of the day we’ve been fckd over for much of the last 40 years so I want us to be as ruthless as can be. We want EPL football at FPR again sometime. That won’t be achieved by being nice and playing fair. Small margins as Ashton said.

I think this is the point. All we’ve heard is the deal is off, a moaning Portsmouth manager and a Portsmouth journalist’s comments.

I hope whatever was done was done right and I’d be interested to hear Ashton’s viewpoint, but I suspect we will never hear the full story.

What I would like to know

If the medical was passed on friday and everything was all ok etc... why did Jacobs leave PR without signing forms.......

Because Edwards move to Celtic wasn’t happening and we acted quickly and ruthlessly when we found out. The dirty has been done on Jacobs no doubt, but the club wanted the younger player, without suspect injury record, on a 3 year deal so they’ve done what they think is right.

I’m sure Cook is not Jacobs favourite person right now, but I’m sure Cook will have agreed with What Ashton has done here and it won’t have been done without his say so

I’m sure Cook would have signed this off, even if it has caused him some issues with Jacobs - that’s the game at the end of the day

Why is it doing the dirty on Jacobs?

It's not doing the dirt on a club when a player has a medical but gets a call from his agent about a better offer and he then changes his mind. So why should town be put down because a better younger player target suddenly became available.

Btw nothing aimed at you in any of the above just an overall response to this apparent lack of class we have.

Jacobs very much a “Cook” type target isn’t he - knows the level, done it before for PC. Edwards fits the approach Ashton mainly took at BCFC of signing young, resellable talent. Presumably having to strike a bit of a balance there.

If you were in Jacobs position you'd be miffed.

...but we did what was best for the club.

I feel sorry for Jacobs, but he'll go on to have a good season.

Because Jacobs has been pushing hard at Pompey to get out, purely because we were interested. And now after all this, which has been going on months, we’ve pulled the plug sometime past the 11th hour.

So he’s presumably burnt a lot of bridges at Pompey and now for what? He has to go back there with his tail between his legs.

Think it's a very good sign of M/A and his management. Why take a potential injury problem when you have.... available instead.

Also.. the resale potential of Kyle is alot lot better.

I don’t think the sports science bods were particularly enamoured with Jacobs from the start which is why it took so long to get here, but he got through a very thorough medical…..so he really got let up the garden path by us.

I think they thought Edwards deal was dead, and when he became available they just went after him without regard for Jacobs. Sort of thing happens a lot but he’s been royally screwed

We changed our minds before Jacobs had signed. Cook and Ashton will be judged on results, not on how nice they have been. Suddenly a better option became available. Nothing personal, it’s a hard-nosed business and these things happen.

Surely if Edwards is free (and better and younger with more potential and resale value), then that player is far more attractive to any club especially where the finances have to be balanced that saving in a transfer fee could be significant! I am sure Pompey and all clubs would make the same business and footballing decision in the same position. And it's not like Edwards was out of the blue, the club had tracked him but rightly thought he would be playing above L1.

Great business to go and get that deal done in the circumstances, put the club 1st for a change!

Quite clearly the suggestion that Morrell signing for Portsmouth depended on the Jacobs fee and getting his wages off the book and that Town were scuppering the deal was wide of the mark too.

Very convenient to forget the number of times players dump clubs in preference for another , at the last minute . I’ve list count of the number of players who’ve done that to us . One if them came from either Southampton or Pompey if I recall rightly ( years ago, but it still happened) !

but we've ended up with a younger player, and a better prospect, so in all honesty I don't care how Jacobs feels.

I think it's pretty clear that we tried to and the fact they announced it at 11pm last night tell its own story. Would have been interesting if Luton would have entertained our approach.

He quite clearly was screwed. If you got offered a job, handed your notice in and then got a phone call last minute before you signed the contract, saying 'sorry, we've found someone we prefer more' you'd feel pretty screwed too.

That doesn't mean we've necessarily done anything wrong, that's business and we've acted in our best interests.

How this has played out is very much why Ashton wants ITK people to keep quiet.

Can quickly make us as a club look poor.

I'm not saying it's bad, as business is business in my world, but when you're dealing with people and livelihoods, you have to be careful with how your business is viewed from the outside world.

Ultimately, we've done what is best for our club overall.
